What type of zombies? Describe the "outbreak" a bit.
I mean, are we dealing with a Shaun of the Dead, High School of the Dead, or a classic Dawn of the Dead situation? How is it transmitted? That's a very important bit of info required to develop a proper strategy.
Generally speaking, I'd head for the countryside (U.S.) and hole up on fairly high ground. I know some pretty good places that mere flesh cannot claw its way into. A mid-sized motorcycle, such as a 650 or 750, would be about an optimum fuel-efficiency vs. speed vs. carrying capacity transport.
I know my way around guns and have decades of experience reloading my own shells, so I'd definitely acquire several pump-action 20 gauge shotguns (good ol' Remington 870s are exceptionally reliable) & modify the barrels down to about 16", several kegs of powder, a couple hundred boxes of primers & empty shells, and about a ton of #1 or #0 shot, which I feel is optimum for exploding rotten brain cases. Opportunity permitting, enhance with a semi-auto (Remington 1100) for a one-handed option, and a couple of handguns, such as Glock .40 cal with copious amounts of high-capacity clippage.
To answer your question: 20 gauge shells are lighter, so you can carry nearly twice as many as 12 gauge, and (especially with optimized reloads) they hit more than hard enough to "get the job done."
I also can swing a sword without cutting my own ears off, so some sort of ~30" one-handed meat-chopping device(s) with enough weight to pass through skulls ... and a honing steel to keep the edge in working order. If not available, a medium weight, ~1 meter crowbar with angled (not hooked) ends.
Standard outbreaks burn themselves out within a week or two, so massive food hording shouldn't be a major concern. It would be a straightforward project to raid a grocery store for raw meat and fish which can be jerked in short order to get by for a month.
Definitely keep an eye out for any hot babes with functioning brains and hot attitude in need of a traveling companion to wash, er, watch her back ... weapons experience a plus ;D 8)

Go over to dad's place, he has all my leads, lock and load, get into the truck and drive to our family safe house, apparently all this was prepared a long time ago in case of civil war outbreak, but applicable in a zombie outbreak as well.
