what constitute a decent name changes greatly depending of the culture you live in.
Don't just assume that you are right. Verify with the best tools available and if you are wrong, change your mind and you will become right.

Which in turn changes with fashion, weather, age and so forth.

And Alexander and Ekaterina are gah.  :P

I contributed Yuki on another thread, but since that seems to be an ill suiting nationality I offer Petra. I liked that name since I first heard it. No idea why. Alex is overused, Ekaterina is alien to me.

Where are you from? That is the most important factor in naming. When my parents named their children they wanted four or less letters in the name.

YES. epic choices man! this will make sure your kids will be great titsuckers!
but seriously though. i think those are cool names regardless. sounds universal enough too.

anyway as a contrib, i'd say Siegen (male) or Heileen (female).

I've always like Elina for a girl, love it how it flies above the tonque. Aino is another I like, not sure why, it's just good.
Honourable mentions to Mira, Mariko, Natalie and Yuki. Like them, even though the last two aren't finnish.

As for boys haven't really encountered one that would have striked me as AH! that's awesome. Jonathan is nice although not finnish.

Because we can!

Those are just eastern European versions of the names we all know too well, Ekaterina might sound alien to you, but think about it for a second: Catherine in England and US, Catarina in Italy/Spain, Katharine in German and Karin in Scandinavic.

Alexander has just as many variations, and depending on country, not so overused. Alejandro in Spanish, Alessandro in Italian and (I had to google this one) Iskandar in middle east.

As other examples, call someone Joseph in England, in Italy it would be Giuseppe, in Russia it would be Iosif (not Stalin  ;D), in Spain and Mexico: Josè and in middle east Yusuf.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

Uh, I do not think these are nice names.

Well the Aleksander one is nice, it could be made in really nice short names like Sasha. Sasha is my favourite Slavic names anyhow. But I heard that in some countries it could be a girls name as well.

But Ekaterina (unless you make it into Katya) is kind of annoying and poor girl ought to get teased a lot with that kind of name. It sounds like and old ladies name, and I haven't met any young person with such name. Get another Slavic name for girl. Name her something like Victoria or Natalia or Alena or  or what ever else.

Here is a nice long list of Slavic names. You ought to find something nice in there.

Heh, my mom tried to think of girl names that are very "international" and and will not be seen as weird in other countries. Thus I ended up in having 2 sisters called Maria and Victoria.

I still do not understand all that "international" name thing. Its nice to have a name that fits place one lives in or culture you belong to where ever you are.

Apart from the fact, that the world is getting more and more "international" or globalized, whatever you want to name it.
I personally don't really like the name Alex + all longer versions and variations of it, but that's just my personal preference.
Ekaterina on the other hand is a nice slawic name which is not that much used in western countries.
I would always look for a name that's not overused, but it should also be a name which doesn't give chance for strange and hurting nicknames later in school, since your child will have to live it's whole life with that name, not you ;)

Another thing you have to remember is: a child has normally two parents, you should both be happy with the name ;)

I myself haven't really thought about a name for a boy yet, but a name for a girl on my list would be Valerie.

Btw: It's Katharina in Germany ;)

Now its even more of use to have a nice name then "international" name

There's a study that found out that the stranger a child's name is, the higher the probability of that child being made fun of by other children. So while everyone thinks that they'll give an "original" and "cool" name to a child, to the rest of the children that have "average" names it's just something to laugh at. So...

Its nice to have a name that fits place one lives in or culture you belong to where ever you are.

this is probably the best choice.

Siegfried is the best name ever (though I wouldn't give it to my son). As for a girl name I think Yuki is really nice but it probably won't fit in many countries so Mai would be better.

Yuki is just a strange name here at Brasil, everyone will know that you aren't brazilian from your name.

Thats the nice thing about the US, Unless your name is something like "Chief Running Horse" or "Hiawatha" everybody already knows you are not native! (But then again, most native Americans take on Western names these days anyway.)

Anyway, I think Yuki is a great name. If I had a daughter I would like to have that as her middle name. Not very practical as a first name here. The problem of having that as a first name is that kids would pronounce it as "yucky" don't need to burden a child with something like that.

Dont they usually have the native name as well? Like in their circle the are called "The Puking Dog" and then for others they are called Bob ?
