Good first anime for a friend of mine?
« on: May 29, 2011, 05:51:56 PM »
To make a long story short there is a girl I have been hanging out with lately that has never really seen any anime, but is interested in checking them out.  I'm trying to think of a good show to start her with - one that wont make a bad first impression.  Any suggestions?  Don't want anything too far out there or has too many "inside" jokes that only anime fans will really get or relies on a heavy knowledge of Japanese culture.

I know as far as TV/Movies go she likes things like Simpsons/Futurama/Family Guy/American Dad.  She likes Harry Potter (books and movies), was excited for the previews for both the new Transformers and X-man.  Not big on kung fu movies tho :(

So anyone have any suggestions?  I was leaning towards something like Trigun or something like that.

Just remember,  before you criticize someone, walk a mile in there shoes.  That way you are a mile away and have their shoes. :P

+1 (pretty much all Miyazaki movies are good choices)

Summer Wars and Toki wo Kakeru Shouj?

You could try showing her the new X-Men series?

Harry Potter - Mahou Sensei Negima! or Negima!?

your friend seems to be fond of adult comedies, then in that case Seitokai Yakuin-domo.
while it has tons of japanese culture based jokes BBT's copies have useful TL notes.

try convincing her not to watch dubs, believe me she'll hate anime.
a good start on dubs would be samurai champloo, it's kinda western themed too.
(though if she hates hip hop she'll hate this)

Okay, that certainly shortens the list if she is iffy around subs. Suggest it to her once she opens up a bit to subs.

try convincing her not to watch dubs, believe me she'll hate anime.
Imo, it's fine to start out with dubs. I imagine she might be put off because it's a bit too much work reading subs. She can try that once she feels like it.

I was thinking about samurai champloo.  I'm not a big fan of hip hop but I still like it.  And she seems to like some hip hop/ rap.

I actually don't know if she would bulk at subs or not.  Was planing on asking her tonight.  Just figured it was safer to avoid them.  (still have x-man d/l for me tho if nothing else :D)

Again, all the Miyazaki movies have great dubs as for as I know. A lot of well-known Hollywood stars provide voices for Miyazaki's movies; Liam Nesson, Billy Bob Thornton, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Christian Bale and Michael Keaton. That should get her interested if she's a movie buff.

I think I'm going to start her off with Princess Mononoke its my favorite of Miyazaki's movies.

well, t'was just my guts talking. having endured 13 years of sub-par
local dubs before discovering subbed anime one ought to get fed up.

but yeah, having seen a few dubs recently i'd say this isn't a bad path.

You can't go wrong with Ghibli movies.

As for series, it depends on the person. When I suggest stuff to my teachers or anyone say, over 30 or something. I dould recommend Monster, Baccano!, Gungrave.

For the younger audience like my friends 16-20 for some reason they liked shoujo comedy stuff, Lovely Complex, Kimi no Todoke, Ouran Highschool. Not saying they're bad by any means ;)

Of course there's always Bleach, Naruto, One piece. Most people around me watch those and hardly know anything about anime.

I didn't remove your signature for fun... Read the rules or say goodbye. Especially now that you have broken another one: Don't doublepost!

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

Wait where did I double post?  I'm renaming a huge list of files at work so I'm going a bit cross eyed here.  And I thought I had fixed my sig to 500px wide.
