Thermal Armors on Motherboards
« on: June 03, 2011, 11:58:09 AM »
ASUS SABERTOOTH P67 (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard.

Was looking through what's new on the market. Minutes before I hit the link, I was thinking if there was a Motherboard design that could like protect the system and if it can draw heat out from the motherboard. Then I saw that and lol'd. What do you guys think?

Taking that armor off actually cools down that motherboard, so i think they are useless.  ::)

Looks gimicky. I'd rather just have a case that blows air on the board.

It works but not out of the box.

The armor is a very large heatsink that covers every chip, capacitor, etc in the board. Heat generated by all these components are spread out all over the board by the armor instead of being concentrated in certain points. The heat sink is not enough though to dissipate all that heat so a small fan (50mm?) can be connected to the board to provide airflow within the armor.

The problem was with ASUS being a cheapskate and not including a fan that fits in that small area between the CPU and the PCIe slots.

Something to think about:
- Was there a problem of motherboards in general overheating in the first place if the system has proper cooling?
- Do you have a problem that you are trying to resolve about a overheat problem?
- Do you want it to show it off or have bragging rights?

If you say something about extending the motherboard life, have you ever used a motherboard until you reached it end of life?

Looks clunky to me; just another hassle factor when working on the system as I see it.

I've got the ASUS Sabertooth X58 LGA and have 0 issues with over heating.

The bored looks sexy without that stupid armor on it.

Less risk of damaging mb components when working inside the case is the reason I got it.
Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason.

Looks cool... probably a heat MAGNET. I'll trust open air Mobos over one that's just one big heat sink.

I've just been to the ATOMIC site to see if they had a review on the MB in the OP and it came up with the one you have.

Apparently your particular MB has been 'ruggedised', which means that it is 'military spec', as tested by a third party...... or that is what it says on the Atomic web site.

Niche products, well there are demands for such so what's stopping ASUS from going the extra (unneeded) mile.
Hell, I think it looks great, solves dusting problems as well.

Here is the problem I see with that. Heat will build up between each component on the mobo and the shield is prevent cool air from the intake fans the heated air under the shield. Its for looks, not performance.
