Help with building a tower
kyubixmunky:
is it just me or does clicking on the details button not working on newegg right now?
Edit:

Should I get this PSU, or wait for a sale on a 650W?

And I am kinda bummed that i got that 4x for 150, and for $15 more I could've gotten this six core a few days leter.

The Thermaltake I posted on the last page is still available for $60 after rebate. We're getting into the exotic range of esoteric differences as far as my knowledge goes, so I couldn't tell you which edges the other out.
As discussed in the last few posts (& previously), something over 600 W is pretty substantial for your build, so the 620 W Antec for $40 probably has more capacity than you'll use.
It's really gonna come down to: 1) how much are you going to overclock? A mild jump to 4.0 GHz from 3.5 doesn't need much, but if you want to experiment in the future and shoot for 4.3 or 4.5, then a bit more juice might be quite comforting. Then 2) which video card you gonna settle on? If you aggressively look for a lower power/eco option, you certainly won't need Big Juice ... but, if you want to upgrade to a monster later on (esp. and you wanna push overclocking in the future) ... then a 700-750 W may be well advised.
It's your budget, then.
On another note, I jumped back here again because I just got this case:
- LIAN LI Lancool PC-K57 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower $49.99 delivered
on a Shell Shocker.
I also grabbed:
- ASUS 24X DVD Burner Black SATA Model DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS $19.99 delivered
I'm shopping around for more bits tonight/this weekend and will post them as I grab them ... looks like I now am racing you to build a very similar system.
Yes, I'm getting the Antec 620 W PSU.
;) :D 8)
I wanna stay under $800 (maybe even ~$750), including a mouse (Logitech wheel Trackball) & keyboard. One of these, but I'd rather it is hard-wired than wireless ... and cheaper; got one for $23 last year.
I'm gonna compromise a bit on the video card, betting on an upgrade early next year. Maybe. Also, I have the advantage that I have a 2TB Samsung drive already purchased that I can use, so that's $70 not spent that I'll invest toward an SSD.
Further, there was a deal earlier this week for 4 GB of wicked performance (G.Skill) RAM, if I can find it again, or something similar. For $55, I'd rather have something I can push to the upper clock limits now and upgrade with another 4 GB or an 8 GB kit later for a total of 8 or 12 by Christmas or next spring.

Alright I'm looking for a mobo in between those two. The first one is just wayy too much with 32gb max ram with only 4 slots, and 3 pcie(2.0) and 2 pcie slots, but the second one only has 1 pcie slot. I' just need a board similar to the second one, but with an extra pci slot so that later on I can expand and run another nvidia card in sli.
for the gpu, I'm leaning towards the gtx 460.

do note that AMD is getting the upper hand in video playback and picture quality, it looks like they're concentrating on eye candies rather than frame rates which just makes sense, considering they're having a hard time beating Nvidia's FPS mad cards.
do note as well that its hard to find SLI on AMD boards =P and going dual card is not really that good, theres alot of games that doesn't go well with dual cards. though you could save some money in the initial cost and just grab another pair later. the cheapest board i found with SLI starts at 95$...
be careful with the PCI-E x16 setup as well, there are some set at 16,4 and others 8,8. the 16,4 performs worse as the card that sits at the 4 gets seriously crippled, while the 8,8 setup gets a balanced state and a minor performance reduction.

Edit: ohh yea, if you really want to go with Nvidia consider the GTX 5xx series too. btw the GTX 460 has three versions, SE, 768MB 192-bit GDDR5 and 1GB 256-bit GDDR5, be careful with picking.

For the 750a moobo, would I be able to use DDR3 1600 RAM on it? It says I can overclock to 2000, but doesn't list 1600.
