« on: June 09, 2011, 03:01:39 AM »
Two Day Poll. Gimme something with awesome animation (choose 3, explain each choice.).
something like my recently finished Kurozuka and the currently ongoing Deadman Wonderland.

you can also base your choice on my highest rated stuff.

EDIT: I won't bump this topic until day 2. kay maybe not /facepalm/

Seirei no Moribito - it has really awesome animation quality, and an excellent story to boot.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - very good story, but it is somewhat lacking in the animation department.
Canaan - good animation, but it is somewhat lacking in the story department, especially in its second half.
Dance in the Vampire Bund - only if you are into EXCESSIVE amounts of loli fanservice.

.
I was very disappointed in Canaan, regarding the plotline.  In fact, the more anime I watch, the more I find that most of them based on video games leave me wanting.  A lot.  In the case of Canaan, the first half really got my hopes up that it was going to be something unusual and special, but the final three Eps. really killed it for me.  I've posted on this before a few times, but (without spoilers) I felt that the maturity level dropped to rock bottom and they went with Really Stupid Ideas and Utterly Worn Out Memes.  Major technical stupidities, in an anime that was building its rep on a fairly hard sci fi/action theme, also really gutted the enjoyment for me.

Your mileage may vary ... but I had to force myself to finish it and it's one of the few animes that I've deleted.  No want to archive, will never watch it again.  Animation quality was pretty good, otherwise.  If you really want an anime that delivers in a very similar genre, find a copy of NOIR ... better characters and character development, better plot, better action, better soundtrack (seriously: one of the best ever anime soundtracks).  Animation is a bit dated due to age, but it's still pretty fantastic.

Hakuouki - Shinsengumi Kitan is very richly animated, great art and mood.  However, I again found the storyline to vary from anemic to brain-hurtingly filled with plot holes and juvenile devices.  Which really disappointed me more than most anime fails.  The base premise of the plot is pretty fantastic and had enormous potential ... but by about halfway through I just wanted it to end and had lost all caring for every single character.  Most characters didn't seem to make decisions based upon their personality; they seemed more doomed to make some idiotic choices because the writers had some point or statement to make with the plot, which they then failed to convey.

No intention of watching the second season.

Of the remaining choices, I have not seen Dance in the Vampire Bund, Pandora Hearts, or Seirei no Moribito.  No opinion at all on Vampire Bund since I've not heard of it before, though I'm not huge into vampires (Blood the Last Vampire & Vampire Princess Miyu are quite awesome, though).  Pandora Hearts I know some about, and it's been on my curiosity list for quite a while .. but I again must decline an opinion on that.

However, Seirei no Moribito has been on my to-watch list and I am pretty excited by what I've read and seen on it.  It seems to fall into a category like something between Sora no Woto, Katanagatari and 12 Kingdoms: pretty serious and epic with glorious animation.  So I voted for that one based upon hope & wishes and wantz.

Aoi Bungaku I recommend because it's a fantastic look into Japanese horror genre.  Perhaps not entirely horror so much as spooky ghost stories, something of mythical and classical in style.  Animation is pretty good with some nice unusual stuff and moody, but these are more story-based ... watch them for that and the animation also happens to be quite enjoyable.

Then, I watched Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 right after the big quake in Japan this year.  It had been on my to-watch list for a while and that event motivated me to finally sit through it.  I wanted to cry a few times.  Maybe it was being saturated in current events, but I also took away from it a sense of Japanese perseverance, survival and stoicism in the face tragedy.  I want to watch it again now.  The animation is modern and good looking, but it's kind of hard to call it "awesome" in the sense that it sets new standards of art (such as Sora no Woto, for example).  It's pretty much what I expect from a realistic style, modern anime.
I win, once again, in my never-ending struggle against victory.

Haven't seen almost all of those, but I just want to say Canaan isn't really any good.

Well, except the crazy, sadistic, psychopath lesbian side character  :P

I kinda enjoyed Canaan, but overall it was pretty average. Pandora Hearts is one of those shows that just stop after 1 season with no actual ending, better of reading the manga and skipping the anime imo

and a wonderful soundtrack. Oh, the story's kinda
good too ;)

@Datora - Detailed as usual eh? thanks, just gonna have to wait until the poll closes itself.

not gonna add that to the poll now. but i'll consider that instead of canaan if it somehow gets high votes here.

Hakuouki, anime based on Japanese history, very well done and animation is quite good. But the story is somewhat sad. It's one my fav animes.

 :o

Let us know how that works out for you ... ;)

NOIR is totally worth it; 26 Eps. is just about perfect for that one.  Maybe for another time.  Like, after you pull your eyes out for choosing Canaan (which, in all fairness, you should -2 on for the above comments). ;D

lol. i made the poll and chose Canaan. so i might as well watch it. 13 episodes ain't much. but yeah, i'll drop a word about it as soon as i watch ep 1 and 2.

anyway, I'm currently watching 14 anime. all ongoing xept for 4. one i can't watch at any time of the day for nudity (my comp's in the sala, lol). I'm already having trouble finishing Darker than Black. takes me a while to process it so i often go for the lighter ones in my my list. now, if i add Seirei no Morbito AND Noir. i don't even know...

First half is actually quite good & fun.  It's the final few Eps. I found insulting. ;)

A lot of NOIR is just beautiful, good action & soundtrack.  When you get to it, headphones or good speakers are must.  Not so hard to process, but if you try to marathon 6+ shows at once, it will get a bit blurry.  Good series to pace yourself on and enjoy.

Kay, first impressions (ep 1&2):

Serei no Morbito - Excellent dub and great story. I like how they gave a darn good kickstart in the first episode.
I was caught off-guard. it was simply amazing. We get a vagrant warrior with pride, grace and unique beauty. then
some nobles were introduced and we get introduced to feudal politics with mysticism. best part for me here is how they
introduced the characters.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - Hmm, This one's pretty realistic. not much to say except "wow, so that's what happens
on earthquakes huh?". Very good characterization. the female lead is pretty easy to relate with too. I can totally see
myself in her shoes. The woman* helping them is one badass chick too. even if she is ordinary. quite rare in anime I
must say. or maybe at least rare on the type of show i usually watch. * i am admittedly not good in memorizing names.

Canaan - I don't know why. but this one kinda felt nostalgic. I probably watch too much Jackie-chan movies.
The fight scenes in the first two episodes are like taken straight from older asian action movies. But i gotta say, the
detailed scenery and smooth animation were pretty great. It helps that the english dub is pretty good and fitting for
the characters. no more trying to read subs and watch action take place! :3 Also, I think I'm gonna steel myself for
the later episodes. currently watching the walking disappointment that is Deadman Wonderland which was good on
the first episode but became bland as the story progresses. I really hope I won't be disappointed on this one.

Actually, it is NOT realistic. It should be called Tokyo Magnitude 7.0, not Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. The number of casualties in the case of real TM 8.0 will be in the range of millions, not about 200,000.
