Your right about ram clocks not making much of a difference, but they do make a difference and it cost next to nothing more for faster ram so why get slower ram. Your far from overspending by getting faster RAM. The cost comes from amount.

A good monitor will cost more and is worth it, but color differences are the last thing you should look at as they can be modified to your liking. The refresh rate, latency, and brightness are things you can't change.

The case is overpriced, but if you can get everything else you want, it don't really matter.

My recommendation is remove the case from the budget for now, get the rest of the parts you need(ssd and monitors), look at faster ram, and then fit a case into the remaining budget.

I meant the overall ability to display colors. ie actual contrast ratio and monitor quality in general. And yes, this screen is bright.

Edit: and he's going to have to tweak more than just the case to get back on his budget.

Also, I don't see the point of getting expensive RAM in general. If you see something at a bargain price, get it; RAM is just RAM.

Your mobo and processor are LGA 1366, which natively supports triple-channel RAM. Any board with socket LGA1366 should have some multiple of 3 RAM slots; most have 6, and yours is not an exception.

If a noisy PC is distracting you during gaming, consider getting noise cancelling headphones before you start buying more gear to quiet the PC. There are some even made for gaming as they come with a boom microphone on the headset. Another approach is give colder air to either the intake of the GT580 cooling fans or to the PC itself. For example, if you live in a desert location, chances are you have air conditioning. Get enough cardboard boxes to help you build an air tunnel from the nearest air conditioning vent to the PC. That's assuming of course that the cooler air is sufficient to cool the graphics cards enough to make their fans run slower.

A third suggestion is to take a look at how the cards attach to the PC case metal. If there is a lot of physical contact, perhaps the vibration of the card is being transferred to the PC case. This can cause the drum effect where a very gentle force can sound much louder than it should. If you think the vibration is being transferred from the graphics cards to the PC case,find some thin springy plastic material to buffer the area where the vibration is occurring.

A fourth suggestion is to put a temporary sound barrier between you and the noisy box. You can already test that effect by picking up a magazine or something and putting it between your ear and the PC. The noise level (particularly the whizzing fan noise in the higher frequencies). It may not be much, but the noise drop might be enough at that point to coexist without spending a bunch of money on more costly solutions.

theres a huge performance leap between 1333 and 1600, anything higher only lowering latency kicks in. so pretty much 1600 and lower latency is your best bet.

theres a huge performance leap between 1333 and 1600, anything higher only lowering latency kicks in. so pretty much 1600 and lower latency is your best bet.

Sources? I've researched this a little bit, and haven't dug up anything affirming what you're saying.

tomo was trying to get a 1333 CL9, while i`m linking a ram at 1600 CL7. big difference. but yea sure, in real world performance they dont have much difference.

That's exactly the point. The real world performance doesn't see too noticeable of a difference. On the later pages of that same study you linked me to, they showed Crysis in-game and it quite literally made no difference. The only game that did was Civilization 5, but that's a fucked up example in and of itself. I can tell you right now that game is probably coded terribly.

That's why you should go for RAM that's on the best deal instead of bothering with overloading on it. He's gonna do 2 things: folding and gaming. I doubt either require the extra premium spent on godly RAM. That's not to say you should get crappy RAM. At least go with 1600. However, it doesn't mean you should overspend on it.

He didn't say godly price tag. He said extra premium on godly RAM. There's quite a difference. If I read correctly, out of the four you link, he would recommend the last one because it's the cheapest, and the others aren't worth the extra $40+.

Or something like this. You could get three sets of these (24GB) for a total of 255 dollars (though to be honest, just ONE $@#!ING SET WOULD SUFFICE BUT WHO CARES RIGHT?! XD).

Also, look at this deal! CL8 1600 RAM for only 75 bucks a set, and it has a perfect 5 star rating. Great deal. That's 225 bucks for a set of 3 (24GB... again who needs that much, but whatever).

We're talking about shaving off at least $100 (on 3 sets; it's 75 dollars off with regards to what you were suggesting, which is still good) with no really noticeable performance decrease for him.

I'm not saying this just because I have a personal, strong hatred for overspending (>_>). I'm saying this because he's nearing his money limit with what he's getting right now, and unnecessary expenses need to be cut down.

No monitor. I don't think this can be truly complete without getting a monitor, so prices still need to be taken down some.

Also, check the second pair of sticks I suggested. They're both cheaper and better (a hard to find "compromise" in these times); that shaves off 30 dollars.

I've got a big hardware RAID array already so I don't know if it really RAID card.

screw your stuff, i went all out on ram and case. cant find 4gb dense 1600mhz ram with CL6 on newegg.
cant find H70 for the cooler on newegg.
raid cards on newegg aren't, well, raidcards, except those with tag prices of 300+$. any less only has around 4slots of SATAIII or SAS.

lets just say +300$ for true raidcard and +100$ for H70 liquid cooler.

How set are you on that particular card? a galaxy one can be had for around 420 (after rebate)
why pay 100 more for the same card? (assuming there's nothing special with the zotac)

ram you probably can be cheap on unless your looking for specific chips, so them g.skills would work, though i would pay 5 extra for the tri-channel (might as well since its an x58)
ddr3 is dirt cheap atm, for 10 more you can get cl8
and for 50 more: cl7
personally I would put my money else where as you'll notice almost no difference, maybe a few extra points when folding

any reason for wd blacks when its for storage? Again money is better spent elsewhere (ie raid card maybe?)

ax1200 is fully modular and can take a beating
an ax850 or hx850 is easily more than enough for this setup but meh, you have cash to burn and you asked here of all possible places

The blue ring is a solid case, full alu construction with good cooling and best of all very easy to work with (its my first recommendation for all my clients looking for highish end gear)
The silverstone fortress is also a good case, although it does have a funny orientation

also curious about the boot drive, will you be transferring files in and out of them fairly often? why are you raiding again?

unless your really trying to save space/neat freak h70 is way overpriced for their performance, any highend air cooler will beat it and cost less to boot

and i dunno about the 990x, I reckon a 970 would be a better choice as again money could be better spent elsewhere as your not trying to get some kind of oc world record.

and black edition... a complete waste of money, just get the vanilla r3e and be happy.

Now with the various bits I shaved off a nas might be a good addition to this build (assuming you have some sort of network)
