Did they honestly not think positively about how would this impact consumers or/and sales figures?

Sounds kinda like the way they handle ads. They recognize a potential revenue stream and they just sort of bulldoze players in order to secure it.

Frankly the always on Kinect thing is just creepy.

Oh, I feel better then.

This is fucked. Period.

Oh, you still need an internet connection and it won't work without Kinect. I feel worse, again.

The Xbox One doesn't have to be online all the time, but it does have to be online. Not just once in a while—once a day, according to Microsoft vice president Phil Harrison.

Microsoft did say that if a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc.

Not very compelling statements.

100% not buying the xbox one now. As far as I care that is always online drm :-\. Hope sony doesn't do it like this too  :(

I dont understand the big deal of the always on. This is most likely the last generation of standalone game systems then everything will be always on cloud gaming so it either starts now or next generation. We live in an always connected world now. And as for the kinect always being on. I have had my xbox 360 connect connected since the day I got it. I see it as no different then the camera built into my tv for skype its always there.

The used game bit is a bummer but Microsoft already came out today and said they are working on a buyback/sell system for used games.

Maybe you do, but I don't live yet with an internet connection everyday. Maybe when the ps5/xboxTwo comes out I will and then I would be little more open to idea but I don't like it at all. Consoles are made for games not for internet, and not having internet shouldn't stop me from using my console  :-\

That is a terrible circumstance and hopefully they can find a way to work for people like yourself. But the era of hard copy media is over everything will be cloud based in the next couple years. Microsoft already did it with the office product suit. There was no retail dvd of office 2013 you buy a product key and have to download the installer. and with the launch of home use office 365 I wouldnt be surprised if the next version of office is online only. And its not just MS doing it. google docs, Chrome OS all rely on having in always on connection.

I myself Will still be buying the xbox one. Im still up in the air on the PS4. I still consider the ps3 one of my worst purchases I have ever made. I bought it at launch Played a few of the exclusive titles but that was it it mostly sat collecting dust, The xbox live online experience was always better for me then the ps3 was.

Read this earlier too and I'm not feeling it. Xbox One might sell well and that worries me. Hopefully it's not actually as bad as I'm thinking it will be though, but the Kinect thing bugs me. That's almost a guaranteed no to Xbox One for me.

The "always on" thing pisses people off because it's taking choice away from the consumer.

"I bought my xbox.  It's mine.  I can do with it what I want to because I'm free, it's my property, and it's my decision."

Always on says, "Nope, you don't get to play your xbox you paid 300-500 dollars for unless we say so!  Btw, you can't go over to a friends house and pop in your game and play there.  Have a nice day, because we already have your credit card information."

Quotes are coming from here.

Quote
What about members of my family on the same console?

YES. If a game is installed on a console, anybody who uses that console can play it through that console's parental controls. But what we don't know is how many accounts this will apply to: four? Five? Two?

Bottom line: you can only share games if your accounts are on the same console and parental controls are set up to do so.

Will it work without Kinect?

NO. Xbox's UK marketing director Harvey Eagle said at last night's Microsoft-hosted stream that Kinect requires to be attached to the console in all cases, and this has since been echoed elsewhere. "The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform.  By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you," says Microsoft's Xbox One FAQ.

However, developers will not be mandated to use Kinect in every game, Phil Harrison clarified to Eurogamer. Another nugget of information: you also can't turn off Kinect's microphone, says hardware program manager John Link (via Polygon). It's always listening.

Da fuq?!

As has been said, that always on kinect with its 1080p camera is creepy as hell.

I don't plan to get the new xbox but like most people it will really depend on the games. If the xbox somehow gets tons of rpgs which are the only games I really care about I would probably still end up getting one. I mean that was the only reason I bought the 360 because I wanted to play a Tales game. But seeing as I think most companies wont be as interested in making games that only work on the new xbox I figure the new playstation will end up being the better purchase.

IF I was planning on getting a system, I would most certainly get a PS4. The hardware seems to be better, and you don't need to check in with your mother every day, and the license to the game is attached to the disk.

PS4 is not backwards compatible either so in that since of making games for a new system they are both the same.

The reason why they are requiring Kinect to be on every console is so developers can ALWAYS ASSUME the user will have Kinect.

One of the big reasons motion controls failed so hard on the ps3 and xbox 360 but succeeded on the Wii last gen was because devs could always assume people had access to those functions.  When Move and Kinect are optional pieces of equipment, however, devs have to consider whether or not to develop specifically for the motion controls or not.  The end result is most of them take the safe route and just make a normal game and maybe port in some alternative motion controls after the core game is made.

Xbox wants more devs to actually design around the Kinect this time around and this is really the only way to do it.

On a side note, I REALLY doubt the xbox will get more rpgs.  Their target audience is always going to be the fps/sports/"streamlined" crowd.

hardware wise they are pretty much equal were are you comparing the better specs? The fact the ps4 has ddr5 and xbox only had ddr3? the 32MB of SRAM on the GPU dye pretty much make them equal in the end with the ps4 maybe having a slight edge over the xbox one. But given the ps3 had about 100 gigaflops over the xbox 360  we all saw how that played out and xbox 360 dominated the ps3 in terms of sales. And being the very small margin of gpu gain on the ps4 I doubt game devs are going to make two sets of graphics one for ps4 and one for xbox one so in the end the games will have the same exact textures.

Spec wise for motion tracking it seems the xbox kinect is above the ps4 motion but since we have not see the new motion in action yet hard to say till E3

The RAM and probably the graphics power of X1 are inferior to the PS4.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-spec-analysis-xbox-one < Search for "compute unit" and read that paragraph. 50% possibly more power and at the same time being based on the same architecture is a huge difference.

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

But this is all assuming that games that share multiple systems want to increase textures in one system but not the other. in teh case of the xbox 360 vs ps3 remember ps3 still had better specs and there was never a true difference between the two systems.  Sure if its a exclusive title it might push it harder but again i doubt we will see that performance ever used.
