The reason is simple. They don't want people to get cheap games/movies from different regions. Don't forget that a AAA titles cost ~75$ in Europe and about 110$ in Australia.

Sorry I wasn't aware of these prices. Is this taking into consideration the inflation and conversion rates? I don't know how much of that actually goes to the developers either because of the cost to import the game to those countries. I guess it would depend on where the distributors are located? With game prices like those I would expect the Xbox One to do poorly for the first few months to maybe a year. Especially since they won't allow used games to be used on other consoles without the owners GT. I really don't know what to think about the Xbox One so I'll just wait for it to be released.

Yeah, I remember when I was about 12 I went to Malaysia. Dad took me to a market and they had so many god damn game boy cartridges it was amazing. For about a tenner he bought me a couple that had some 50 games on each. Not shitty games either, one of them even contained an untranslated and as yet unreleased Pokemon Gold/Silver (it had BOTH). I never needed another game in my life. For a fucking tenner. Oh the days before region locking...

Actually the ps3 and xbox 360 had the same thing both have region lock methods inside its up to the game developers if they want to use them or not I assume ps4 and xbox one will be the same. With the exception xbox did region lock digital content like DLC from xbox live
Side note there is I think 2 titles on the ps3 that are region locked all the others are region free. xbox 360 did have some region locks but a lot of them were region free as well
