Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse

It was precisely explained that Total Eclipse is a side story, people that don't know the original series will be pissed off because they know fucking nothing.
I didn't watch the original so I want them to explain shit at least a little.

I'm dropping this until it's over. Going from a dark apocalyptic war to beach fan service at this point has totally drained what enthusiasm I had left over from the first two episodes. I was hoping for Gunbuster, but less over-the-top, and grittier like Blue Gender -- but now they don't seem to have a plot anymore. They've decided to shift focus so completely on the central romance plot that it's just silly in comparison to the stark beginning. I couldn't care less about it at this point. Especially considering the annoying American is annoying on a fundamental level, and I deeply want him dead.
You needn't have to choose between a romance the expense of the whole war narrative, Gunparade March did a good job at integrating the two without coming apart at the seams.

There are probably hot springs as well.
Apparently the Soviet standard issue swim wear is a bikini - it's got a hammer and sickle and everything. The UN swimsuit is of dubious quality as well.
