They sounded like this.

Horrible, never want to hear that ever again.
^ GTFO! That sound gives me nightmares! 5kbps connection? WTF is up with that?

You guys have no idea what you're talking about. That was the clarion call that heralded one's entrance into a brighter world, a world full of wonders and mystery, an ungoverned place where one's wildest dreams were the limit, and beyond those limits were unknown regions, tantalizing, awe-inspiring and frightening all at once. It was the sound that bid farewell to grey routine, the sound that made one lose one's past, the sound that levelled all differences, how one looked, what others thought of one and thought they knew of one, nothing mattered any more. It was the sound that announced ultimate freedom, the freedom to define oneself instead of being defined by others. One had no past and no future, there was only a glorious ever-changing present.

No, that is no sound of nightmares, it is the sound of a dream, a dream you have while you're wide awake, a dream you can live.

+1 ;D

I started going to the internet like huh, when I moved to Slovenia.
Wasn't really regular till 2005, then I started using the internet daily.
The first forum I joined was a hacker forum, which removed the hacking part after a while due to legal reasons.
Got quite some 'google this', 'google that' responses when I was still 'fresh'. I learnt quick that I it's stupid to ask everything on the forums, so I got used to googling.
Yeah, good old times.

I have never been a noob since I started kinda early (when 14.4k modems were the best on the market, recall how happy I was at the switch to a 56k modem I won in a competition [which lightning killed but I faked other causes and got replaced]) and had decent common sense. The threshold for what is a noob has climbed with the amount of users online and their level of experience. I have of course made bad posts/threads, but everybody does that occasionally.

+2 All you young'uns have no clue eh? The satisfaction of finally seeing that picture after it finishes loading for a few minutes, ripping your hair out after that 500MB download cut off halfway during the night, waiting for flash games to load on newgrounds, hmm what else?

Heyyy, dial up isn't that old you know, it was the shit around 15 or so years ago, give or take a few years later. I (vaguely) remember there was a time where Windows '95 was still fairly commonplace, only recently being eclipsed by Windows '98. Also remember when XP came out, now that was a real upgrade from '98. 2000 and ME were terribad.

I successfully purged it from my memory alright, until a recent forum poster REEEMINDEED ME!

Ah, the times of dial-up...
...the times when child porn was still commonplace in the internet.

I used 2k over XP since I liked it more. I still like 2k more than XP.

The real upgrade was from the windows prior to 95 and up to it. When you were still using DOS as much as windows 3.11 since DOS had bat programs and many games/programs were made for DOS instead of windows.

I remember Windows ME... I remember never buying it (skipped two generations from 98 to XP). I remember my friend had it when we were kids. His "troubleshooting" was just hitting the computer quite violently. Even as a kid I knew that wasn't really how to fix it.
