were you using something like IBM 5100 back then?

Honestly, I've forgotten.  It was the one computer available to the "Academically Talented" (the AT) students at my high school.  Out of 45 or so of us, only about ten of us were trusted enough to fight for time using it.  I joke not: we r*e*s*p*c*t*e*d those cassette tapes.  Very fragile and much wailing, gnashing of hair and pulling of teeth when they overheated and stretched.  There was no system to duplicate them for back-up copies.

My first programming experiences in University were cardboard, key-punch cards and a DEC writer (a dot-matrix printer with a keyboard on it).  No monitor; all programming was done type-written on paper.  Monitors were too luxurious to waste on freshmen; they were reserved for upper classmen and professors.  PASCAL, COBOL, Structured Basic ... how I remember you with great loathing and no small amount of fear.

That's exactly how my dad described learning programming in college. He's 47.

All hail datora, our omniscient patriarch.

In comparison to him, we are all noobish little bitches.

this will replace your BL quote, thank you.

Doing pascal on paper is fun, except for the part where your hand hurts I mean. I had an exam like that this semester.

you gonna use paper and typewriter too?

datora - man, you're damn awesome. you've probably pretty much seen computing evolve.

Yep, been there done that, had the 'use search' response and all.

These days I think a bit before I post and there have been several times where I have gotten halfway through writing a response and thought, "Nah, it's not worth the time" and hit the 'go back one page' button.

Heh, those were days.

When I think of just how far PC's have come, it just boggles the mind.
I remember going to Tech and using what they considered to be 'state of the art'  computers back then. I can't even remember what they were, but they had monochrome screens and 5 1/4 inch floppy drives.
Those drives were massive, they held 360k on ONE disc! :o :o

Man I feel old. Not as old as your father though.  :P

I'm not really active on the forums most of the time. I keep to myself not to get more involved so my noobiness wont show.
This was my first thread (I think) and since it seems that it got some of the veterans out of their cave, It was a victory for me :) especially when I only had twenty something posts.

Some of us are still using COBOL in the real world.  I don’t program in it myself, but pretty much all of my job for the last 10 years has been about testing code written in it.  COBOL is still going strong in certain circles.

On topic, similar to datora, my internet experience goes back a ways.  I went through internet noobiness when a 28.8k modem was considered fast.  On the bakabt forums, I didn’t really have a noob phase, as I was already familiar with forums.  I wasn’t very familiar with bittorrent before starting here, but I’m not a complete idiot and I figured it out without having to post a bunch of stupid questions.
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

but to answer your question.  yes i have.  my first few posts on this site went no where lol.  everyone was like, who the hell is this guy.  once i was more accepted in the community my threads were taken more seriously.

wait, what is this "gil system" you speak of? and, yeah. true that. but it won't be a problem unless you live and breath internet.

well, the gil system was basically money.  you got gil every time you posted.  you had to buy stuff to upgrade your posts, like larger sig space, multiple colors you could choose from to make your nick kewl, etc etc.  it was fun and there were only like 30 members back then lol.  we still have a facebook group where we all keep in touch.  we even skype a couple times a year.  we used to have an irc channel but no has logged on to it in years.

anyway, ya, the more gil you had the cooler you were lol ;)

The gil system was awesome but I think they removed it because too many people were spamming the forums

Well, BBT forums is only forum I've ever been active, and I doubt I had my noob days, sure my sig were way off limit's the first time I added it, but thanks to some considerate PM's from Akecu and froody, I had that sorted out within the hour itself. I haven't gotten yelled at anything for being a jerk as far as I know, so I guess I didn't have any noob days. But obviously I didn't know anything either, so I took my time and looked around before I got active, and I still don't know a lotta stuff like for example:

And for some inexplicable reason I'm an admin now, go figure...

I tend to be overcautious so that I won't look like a n00b. Also, I still have some 4chan withdrawal symptoms... sometimes I want to say/post something really bad but I have to abstain because my brain says 'wtf r u doing, this is not /b/'; but there's always that part that says 'DO IT FAGGOT!', and it's hard to not give in to it... so sometimes I make a fool of myself, or annoy people. feels bad man.
