Tablet for media consumption?

most tablets has low res, so the res of the video doesn't matter that much, the problem is the bitrate, which is one hell of a thing to render. you've seen a single 2hrs movie with a size of 30gb right?

this is evident with some copies that exist in BBT, i`ve seen 720p being bigger than the 1080p, just because the 720p has waaay higher of a bitrate than the 1080p. so in short, you watch out on the file size of the video, the res doesn't matter much i.e. if you play a 1080p movie on a 720p screen, the movie will automatically adjust and play @ 720p too, something like downscaling itself BUT the bitrate is the same.

but heres a tip, dont just grab a tablet and slap in some anime like a tard, first thing to do is to know what core components the tablet has, i.e. the processor and the gpu and the native resolution of the tablet's screen, once you know those, start googling and find some reviews about their performance and if they could drive a video on that native resolution.

like the old classmate i have, he saw a brandnew notebook for like less than 250$, and bought it like a tard, first thing he said was "wtf, notebook lags when playing 720p anime" because the notebook has a n270 atom +gma 950 with a native res of 1360x768...

^CoreAVC fixes that.  :P

Anyway, as it's been said check the usual tablets that are released and their specs, reviews as well and see if they're reported to play. Memory is also another thing to think about, does it also take removable storage? You don't want to be stuck with a measly 8/16GB and that's that.

+1

actually the solution was GMABooster + CCCP+CoreAVC. did the trick, though still goes into slideshow mode from time to time. hes an ass that even tries to play blueray rip movies on it.

All the android tablets seem to be running the same processor (tegra 2) and performance is about the same across the board. I couldn't find any info on suppported bitrates tho. I'm thinking of either the asus transformer or the motorola xoom. Both have 32 gigs, but the xoom is a hundred buks more and has USB. Has anyone tried using an external HDD with a tablet?

What's media support like for the tablet version of Android (2.3 I think)? On phones it's quite limited, and due to the nature of the Android system, it's very hard to get more codecs without having to root the system first (which voids the warranty IIRC). Android 2.2 can play almost nothing by default; there's a media player called Rockplayer which is able to play h.264 reasonably, and actually supports the mkv container (still no flac audio though), but it's still completely useless for subtitles etc. I have to convert anime into hardsubbed 480p xvid to be able to play it reliably on my Android.

It doesn't matter how powerful the tablet is if it doesn't have the codecs for playing the videos, so it might be worth checking up on that if you can before buying one.
