Anime/Manga Collection Organizer
« on: June 29, 2011, 05:36:41 PM »
I was wondering what programs/websites people use to manage their collection. Everything I have tried doesn't meet my needs in the way I want it to. I would really like something that can manage what I own, what I've seen, what I want to see, and what I've rated. As a software engineer I've decided that if I can't find something that meets my needs elegantly, I will be forced to create it myself. :)

I'm assuming you've looked at MyAnimeList.net and AniDB.net already, right? Both of those are pretty good, though I personally prefer MAL for managing my list, since editing things on AniDB isn't exactly the friendliest of experiences. They both do everything you listed though; AniDB is better for managing what you have (and where you have it) and what you don't have, whereas MAL is better for listing what you've seen, want to see, etc.

http://wiki.anidb.net/w/AniDB_Clients is AniDB's clients for keeping track of anime automatically. For manga there is no such thing.

MAL supports manga, and while I don't know of any clients, it does have an API, so if worst comes to worst, you could always write one yourself. I find doing it all manually online is easy enough for MAL that you don't really need a client though.

I tend to split it up, anime anidb, manga manga-updates. Anidb since I like the database look, I even use a normal book site that is similar in style with members adding a lot of the information.

I've been looking into starting an anime list for myself too. I'm curious though, does no one use the Anime News Network MAL?

Well, it's the Anime News Network My Anime List, so I just made it MAL for short. I didn't mean to say that MyAnimeList.net and ANN are the same.

Yeah, the ratings you give shows on your list at ANN show up on their manga and anime ratings statistics. It's not at as fancy as the other sites you all seem to use though. You just give a rating and what audio you saw it in (RAW, eng subbed, eng dubbed or eng dubbed edited).

The biggest problem I have with it is that ANN is a high-traffic site and is very slow very often.

I'll probably just go with MALnet.

There are several donationware (no limitations if you don't donate) software products out there that run on your PC that handle anime and/or manga.  One is ComicRack which allows users to create plugins to customize it for their purposes.  Look over the list of plugins to see if there is already one that fits your needs.  Another standalone tool goes through your doujinshi files and renames the filenames based on the information at the doujinshi database.  It will also rename files for which you don't know any details.  Of course, you say how can it name a doujinshi with a name totally not connected to an anime such as "moe overdose.rar"?  It reads the files and automatically tries to use the first image to match to an existing doujin cover, and once it has that, it can then read off the data from the database.  The author has not tried to automate it go to e-hentai to do matchups there, but that would be pretty neat if it did that to find a name.  There was a freeware that would read the scanned barcode on your purchased items, but that was for use with the free CueCat barcode scanner which not everyone may have.

Please be encouraging to the authors of these tools

Mal + Mal updater :)

+1 for Mal updater.
Ever since i started using that i've stopped using notepad for tracking my episodes, and have been able to find/watch anime series a lot faster than before.

Exactly I have been using excel for years and it has been the best way to keep up with everything I have read, watched, and own.  And the best part it takes only seconds to update.

And if you have an android or IOS phone you can even update and share your database instantly. It is a great way to stay organized and remind you about things you have read or watched before
