--- Quote ---A court-ordered search of vaults beneath a temple in India has turned up a treasure worth at least $11 billion, according to reports from the Indian state of Kerala.
An inventory of what lies beneath the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, as reported on the website Business-Standard.com and others, reads like a prop list from an "Indiana Jones" movie:

    Rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls

Replicas of coconut shells made of pure gold

Hundreds of thousands of gold and silver coins, some dating to the 16th century

Gold chains as long as 18 feet

    Solid-gold human figurines and idols

    Crowns and pendants

    Gold and silver bars

--- End quote ---

can you just imagine if this was one temple...how much the Brits took when they ransacked india.

Micharus:
Can you imagine how pissed off the government of India is going to be though?

They won't be allowed to convert very much of it to real money, as a lot of it will be classed as 'artifacts'.

Can you imagine the international uproar if they decide to do something along this line, "Ok, take half the gold coins and figurines. We'll melt them down and use them to prop up the economy. Take that lot of gems over there and put them on the international market."

No, reckon it's going to be quite some time before India sees any sort of benefit from that treasure.

isukianime:
why would they need to do that? india's a 3rd world country sure but their projected to grow 9% this year alone. and since when does the world get to decide on what any country classifies as an artifact?

TMRNetShark:
$11 billion? That isn't much for a country that has a $1.4 trillion GDP. That $11 billion would help.... maybe... with securing their borders a little bit more... if they were allowed to use it all.

Havoc10K:
Actually they can use the treasure to make money, even if they are artifacts.

Bunch of people would pay to see it ...
