So in answer to the topic name, no, never.

most popular and consumed by the masses ... yes. Best player in any way shape or form... NO. If you start including things that would make it better then other players out there after you get pat most popular its list of things it does better then a lot of players is nearly gone.
Things like battery life, audio quality, codec support, output volume, just to name afew

^i`d say a good music player should support these:
80gb of free space minimum
support flac without issues
battery lasts 3days minimum
smaller than your average cellphone
must not cost more than 100$
output audio quality is the real deal

While we're at it I'd love to have a super computer that cost $500 dollars and was user friendly. Buuuuut it just doesn't turn out that way. Yes lack of FLAC support is a punch in the dick but at some point I find myself converting just to save space on my harddrives.

Just because you personally believe in undoing the entire point of having flac files doesnt mean everyone does. Especially when speaking in regards of audiophiles.

On that note: with the release of the firmware upgrading the Cowon D3 from Android 2.1 to 2.3 my recommendation for the product has gone from "has some major issues, but sound quality and file support are excellent" to "I love this media player so much <3."
