FLACebo on portable gear is hilarious o say the least.

Maybe if all you're using are JVC Gummies.

I have triple armature headphones. There is a difference.

Yes, I'm sure your songs are killer samples and you are so well trained in spotting compression artifacts that you can easily pick out the lossless one in ABX tests. On a train. With humans around you.
All you have to do is study it out. Just study it out.

no if you have a player that puts out a better range of sound with better clarity and can actually handle good set of phones without a secondary amp, it is definitely noticeable.

I generally hit around 80% on ABX tests. Also: passive noise canceling. Also, also: flac tweaks better, it's more accepting of the use of an equalizer since everything is there. Also, also, also: most of my flac is classical, where it makes a bigger difference due to the greater dynamic range of the sound.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

Even if you use the best memory foam it will still let in quite a bit of environmental noise, easily overwhelming the subtle improvements from using lossless codecs. Like I said, ABX 'em in environments where portable players are commonly used, like daily commuting.

What it comes down to is that I find the idea of critical listening in generally noisy environments laughable and futile.

must not cost more than 100$

That is truly impossible.

think again?

But do they meet any of your other requirements? One is 1/10th the storage space, the other 1/40th. The iPod shuffle sounds like the audio is being filtered through mud (haven't heard the Samsung). The iPod definitely doesn't support flac (the Samsung might but I doubt it).

So, physically small and <$100. Not that great, imo.

The HP Touchpad 32gb is 100$ atm and is the closest you'll ever find in that price range

i think the topic is done.
arguing whether or not someone would hear a difference in flac while playing it with a portable device is "laughable and futile" at best. not only have you no idea where he is while mobile (jogging in a forest would produce a sufficiently quite background, no?) nor do you have his ears.
