Improvised Computer Maintenance?
Pentium100:
Some time ago, the fan in the power supply went bad (I think I only had one PC at the time). Since it was weekend, I couldn't go to the store to buy a new fan, but wanted to use the computer (and the broken fan was really loud and turned slowly). So I took one of the system fans, put a toothpick in the broken fan (to make it stop spinning and making that noise) and glued the system fan to the outside of the PSU over the exhaust hole. My solution worked well enough so that nothing overheated until I bought a new fan and replaced it, but IIRC I had to keep the case open to compensate for the missing system fan.

Of course they do. I have a 4U rackmount case that weighs 16kg when empty. The metal is 1mm thick.

I've used some off the wall fixes for my systems before, but I think the best to date was for my 200Gig Zune. The audio was jacked up for some reason, so i opened it with a paint scraper and found that it was due to a connection behind the "lock" switch. So, i ripped the lock switch out, and stuffed a folded twist tie in there and it comes out of the old opening for the lock lol. Every once in a while it will get jarred lose until i push it back into place. Worst part was, i had to have the thing on and running the whole time i was doing this to hear the corrections in audio quality lol.
