Normal Sleeping...
« on: July 14, 2011, 11:00:29 PM »
Hey guys, I used to play a browser game wherein you have to be active as frequent as possible....

http://zelderex.com/

I stopped playing this for almost 2-3 months due to the fact that the game is dying (not much players). But the fact that when I have my sleep, I tend to wake up every 4-5 hours... When I was still playing it, I set my alarm in order to wake up every 2 hours....

Would you guys give me some tips on how to "reboot" my normal sleep since an average homo sapien need 7-8 hours of sleep?

I tend to get sleep-deprived most of the time....

Well normally you should just keep at it and sooner or later you should be back to a normal sleep pattern. Altough in unconventional means id say try getting urself wasted a couple days in a row.. No way you should wake up every 2 hours then.

easy, i got this issue as well, theres four tricks.

either:
keep sleeping, dont get up from bed, keep your eyes shut, you`ll fall asleep again.

dont sleep for the whole day until night, you`ll be asleep for the whole night, repeat this a few times like twice a week. or actually, just dont sleep for like 24hours then go to sleep XD you`ll be sleeping like a rock.

get some workouts before sleeping, heavy ones that tires you out like mad, makes you easily fall asleep.

get drunk.

Lay in bed with zero stimuli and just wait for sleep, if you are afraid to do the following-
Get fucking drunk. Drink early and go until you pass out. You will both basically force yourself to sleep AND you will get a nice long rest on top of it.

Also, you can try some of the sleeping pills on the market. Ive never used any but I guess they work.

Stay up for 36 hours. Get grapes and put them in blender and blend them really good. Drink two to three cups of grape juice that you made before you sleep, then go to sleep. You won't wake up for more 12-16 hours. I do it to control my sleep ...

Consistency is really important to getting back into a normal sleep pattern.  Everybody is a little different, so you have to find out what works for you.  In general, though, you want to start by going to bed and getting up at the same times every day.  It's also important to avoid things that disrupt normal sleep patterns -- for example, avoid caffeine (I generally don't drink it less than 8 hrs before I go to bed), exercise, or anything else that would get you wound up in the hours before you go to bed.  I have also heard that exposure to blue light reduces the production of melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep, so that would be another thing to avoid shortly before going to bed.  Generally speaking, any kind of stimuli that gets your brain or body going is something to avoid or cut down on in the hour or hours leading up to bed time, and finding things that help you relax before it’s bedtime is a good idea.

Alcohol may help you fall asleep, but the quality of your rest will generally be lower than without it.  Even if you can't fall asleep right away, try to stay in bed with your eyes closed, with little or no outside stimuli.  If your mind is too overactive, try clearing your thoughts -- essentially, any kind of meditative or breathing technique to help you relax is a good idea.

Most people are attuned to sleeping at night, so it’s generally a good idea to keep your room as dark as possible; cover up any LEDs or other lights if it helps.  And, of course, minimize or eliminate any sounds that would distract you.  Some people find that white noise or music helps them fall asleep; I don’t, I prefer quiet.

I also try to avoid drinking anything an hour or two before bed; if I don’t go to the bathroom right before going to sleep, sometimes the need to go will either wake me up during the night, or it won’t, and I’ll sleep more uncomfortably during the night.

People with genuine insomnia would probably have more to add, or have more unique methods of dealing with lack of sleep.  A friend of mine is an insomniac, and he occasionally has to push himself through several days of no sleep before his body finally shuts down; then he may sleep the sleep of the dead for 12-16 hours.

EDIT – sleep aids may help in the short-term as well, but I don’t recommend using them a lot, to avoid from becoming too dependent on them.  A single Tylenol PM (which has 25mg of diphenhydramine) once in a while is usually enough to help me fall asleep if I need it; 2 makes me groggy for a bit the next morning.  (I don’t take a lot of medication.)

That’s pretty much everything I can think of at the moment.

I will try what you said... Oh and about the blue lights... Coincidentally, I am using a blue-colored night lamp all the time since my curtains are blue and all... Since I am a person who can't sleep on a pitch-black room so I may try using different colors instead... ;D

I also wouldn't try pills since I am quite nervous that it may affect me negatively somehow and I don't know what... :-X

Getting drunk isn't my thing also... :P

I agree on doing things that require a lot of energy (working out, sports, etc.). Also I find it easy to fall asleep if I have the tv on. Hell you could try putting a shitty movie on and see if that helps falling asleep.

Stuff like Tylenol PM or the generic equivalent generally won’t cause any harm as long as you limit yourself to the dosage indicated on the label (and don’t take other products containing acetaminophen at the same time, so that you’re not accidentally overdosing on it).  You absolutely should NEVER combine acetaminophen with alcohol, not unless you intentionally want to destroy your liver.  Taking it with caffeine isn’t a good idea either.  Otherwise, it is essentially just a sleep aid with a pain reliever.

As several posters have suggested, heavy exercise that tires one out may help one fall asleep, but my experience is that a big workout late in the day or in the evening actually makes it harder for me to relax and get a good night sleep.  Your experience may vary.

Now I think it’s time for me to heed my own advice and hit the hay myself.  G‘night everyone!

I usually have to change my sleeping schedule between two different 'modes' if you would want to call it that because of work.  Adjusting from going to bed to say anywhere from 2-4AM and then needing to wake up 4-5AM in the morning the next day will be almost impossible; so I just deal with it, get tired, and take a nap that's three hours long when I get home - any longer and you would probably mess up your sleeping schedule.  This is the case tonight for me...

Tylenol PM works fine for only short-term but like the previous poster mentioned, just watch how much APAP you ingest so you don't fuck up your liver.  Might as well just buy another solution that contains only the DPH so you don't ever run the risk of too much APAP.

I had severe insomnia starting from 6th grade and the only option I pretty much had to function was to take prescription pills; Geodon and switched to Trazodone years later.  It's not that bad, but you better either get fucking seven (preferably eight) hours of sleep or prepare for one of your worst days of your life; I could compare it to at least two days minimum without sleep if not more.  I forgot to refill my prescription a few times and I've gone dry while being dependent on them...  Not very fun...

I managed to break my dependency from them last year by slowly taking less and less (not exact, but whatever, fuck using a scale) over a couple of months.   Now I can sleep like a normal person.

Psh, I run on 3 to 4 hours of sleep year round.

Though I would echo the suggestions on forcing yourself to stay up some ridiculously long amount of time, then letting your body knock yourself out :P

I have been taking melatonin for like 4 years now. It used to take hours for me to fall asleep, when I take melatonin it takes me around half an hour and I sleep straight through to the morning. No side affects except for awesome vivid dreams fairly often D:

Hmm, I used to pull all-nighters, and then go to school, needless to say, I wasn't able to perform well, but it was necessary to get my homework done. I'd do one of the following things-

- sleep a few hours when I got back, and then wait until I was supposed to sleep
- sleep fully out although that forced me to stay in bed quite a long time while not being able to sleep
- go out and run 4km, it's enough to make you tired though you have to wait until you're supposed to sleep
- watch one movie before sleeping, put on a no-brainer movie like Transformers

what not to do-

- play a game
- drink coffee (you don't really realize it's late until you look at the time since you don't feel sleepy at all, but it's also hard to get sleepy once you decide to hit the sack)

ichigoTAN, that sounds really unhealthy, perhaps find a game that doesn't require you to miss out on sleep?

I've been sleeping somewhat normally since I finished studying, and I feel great. Then again, am almost 23 instead of 20 when I started studying...

where did my last post on this topic go O.o?

ohh well, the most effective way to put your self to sleep is jumping off a building, simple right? no waking up though. other than that, waste your self until you cant move a finger, like run 10miles under an hour or or hit the bench and crunch your body 100times per set, 10sets.

As for drinking alcohol ... you don't necessarily have to get drunk ...

I find that if I drink a bottle or two of Smirnoff Ice ... or I had gone to visit my bartender friend E and had a drink or two ... I fall asleep earlier than usual.

My sleeping pattern tends to get fairly messed up during the holidays, so when it reaches the point where I'm going to bed at 3-4am, and waking up at like 12-1pm, my usual tactic is to just do an all-nighter. Stay awake all night, and all the next day, then go to bed at a reasonable time the next night. Guaranteed to get plenty of sleep that night, and fixes your sleeping pattern so you'll begin to feel tired again around bedtime. It always works for me, though I expect different things probably work for different people.

Yeah, I find a single pint of beer makes me sleepier than if I drink a lot. After 2 or 3, I tend to feel more awake, not less. It probably depends what it is you're drinking though; a pint of real ale is guaranteed to help you fall asleep, but a couple of shots of vodka will have the opposite effect.

Years ago, when I worked nights, I used to take melatonin, too, and it had a similar effect on me -- it helped me fall asleep more easily and came with really weird dreams, although in my case, I slept a lot lighter than normal.  I tend to talk in my sleep and/or thrash around a lot, though, so stuff that makes me sleep lighter is not really a good idea for me.  Thankfully, at least I haven't fallen out of bed in years.

Did you have an accident or something?

OP:

These folk are correct, though. I'd lean away from the whole 'drinking' thing, but there is some good advice here.
