Sigh, they sent a survey about pre orders, I thought, why not. Then they have a list of 10 games and ask which 5!! I look forward to the most. I plan to play at most 2 of those titles... Meaning I have to answer incorrectly in order to progress...

Just thought I'd chime in and say I just spent the weekend Beta testing the game.  Can't say much about it because of the agreement, but I will say it was really good.  And the story is more engaging than I thought it would be.  I'm genuinely sad that my Jedi Consular is gonna be deleted now that the Beta is over.

And I didn't even think I'd like a Jedi class.  Was more interested in Imp Agent and Trooper.  Now I want to play Consular the most....

I got into the "stress testing" one that they just announced (basically me and everyone else who signed up at the forums XD). I cannot wait to try it out... I'll be playing it ALL weekend long. :)

Yeah, got invited to that. Probably will spend more time setting the game up than actually playing it though.

Supposedly everyone who signed up for testing is suppose to be invited for that 'stress test' in 2-3 weeks, forgot when.  I wonder if that means I'll be able to play it again then.

Part of me doesn't really care since its coming out in like 35 days.  But part of me wants to try Imp Agent before launch to truly decide who I want to play.

I'm totally expecting "We are experiencing high levels of volume, try again later." XD

I won't be able to log in until 11:50pm on Sunday and I'll only be able to play the first mission... out of 1000's...

When I got my confirmation e-mail, it was about 3 days before my beta test started and I was able to download the client at that time.  So if you have a confirmation e-mail, I suggest just downloading it now before the day arrives.

Well, I'll be testing the game on Saturday, my entire weekend is shot and I'll be doing nothing but that (if I'm able to get into the servers that is!).

What class should I start out as first? Smuggler and Trooper are off limits til launch (the two classes I want to play first)...

Play whatever you want.  Honestly everyone who has tried the beta seems to like different classes than they begin, including me.

Also, i got into this beta too.  Seems they're handing out passes to anyone who signed up.

Stress testing baby! You know what that means? I'm not getting into a server until 11:50 the following Monday. XD

A friend of mine has confirmed my assumptions. It is a Massive Singleplayer Online (MSORPG) game. Although it is not so different from many other MMOs, this one did the single player part much better (voice acting, interaction, etc).

However what will make this a game to buy or not to me is the end game content. Even those who never played WoW know that raids are the big thing as end game content and we have all seen that MMOs with bad/non existent end game content usually die quickly.

So that is all that remains to see in SWTOR. I bet it will take around a month before powergamers review that part of the game and if it is really good... hell even I may buy it and then pay to some Chinese leveler to level up my char to the end game.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

Lol Ace we are coming from different directions. I would get it for the single/multi player experience up to the end game when I will likely quit unless it is very good. Which means I have no reason to get the game at launch or somehow or another get into good guilds.

If that part of the game is lacklustre (as in most mmos) I won't play it. Since that is part of what I am looking for in games.

Sosseress, I also want that in games. However I accepted that singleplayer games will always be superior in that context because they allow you to literally change the course of the realm. You are THE hero, not a hero. Thus when it comes to MMO, I look at completely different things as single player games already satisfy my need of good quests, etc..

Well after extensive play and trying all but the Sith classes, I now know my main character is going to be an Imperial Agent for Empire, with an alt of Jedi Consular for Republic.

Can't believe the game is coming in less than 3 weeks.

So...I'm a gamer who's never really liked MMO's.  The only one's I've put significant time into are Guild Wars and DFO.  Games where there is a lot of focus on action and strategizing how to build your character (rather than merely grinding while putting yourself into some cookie cutter that everyone else demands you build yourself into if you want a party).

I enjoyed Guild Wars because I didn't care at all about grinding.  There was none, I hit level cap in a couple hours.  What followed was hunting rare monsters, building my skill list to experiment with new hero combinations and exploration of new areas.

I enjoyed DFO because it's more an action game with rpg elements.  Player skill becomes more important than your actual build in the late game when enemies start using difficult patterns of attack.  Each character had 4 subclasses within which you could build your character dozens of different ways and still be effective.  There was no cookie cutter for "the best blade master" or "the best summoner," and as a result there was a lot of diversity in everyone's builds.  Furthermore, every character played RADICALLY different from one another.

Given what I like about the two MMO's I've enjoyed in the past, would you people who've played this game over the beta recommend this game to me?

Is this a game where there are still the healer/dps/tank division that everyone has to fit into to do well?

Will this be a game where there will be a certain build for each class that is simply superior to all other builds?

Is there ever a point in the game where you grind for the sake of grinding?  If so, how long and is combat good enough that it is an enjoyable grind?

The only reason I'm bothering to look into this mmo is because Bioware has a hand in it, the same Bioware that made NWN, Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age 1.

I never did play further than the first dungeon (Black Talon) and there was no need for healer there. I do, however, feel that you will need the definite healers / dps / tanks to succeed later on in the game (especially raids). Someone with experience from higher levels should probably answer this.

Cannot answer this, didn't look at the talent trees too much (but I do have a feeling that there will be the superior build that everyone wants for their raids and such).

The combat was more fun than that of WoW's (imo) and grinding kills here and there was not so bad. There was not much need for grinding because there are a lot of quests out there (in the levels 1-15 anyway).

And now, would I recommend this? I really can't say. If you like Star Wars, voice acted dialogue and choises, I do recommend at least trying it out.

I was looking at this but... the class system seems to ridged. Now I've only really played one real mmorpg (Rift) and before that was a Korean grindfest mmo (Ragnarok).

Ragnarok was, of course, terrible, but it was free when I played it so it was w/e.

But what Rift has done is spoil me on class expectation. The dev team (of SWtoR) can talk all they want about "natural progression" or w/e, all I know is that in Rift I was playing a mage (because that's what I play in D&D, an arcane spellcaster of some sort; though not necessarily a wizard) and was going DPS in dungeons (with ridiculous queue times). I got fed up with the queue times, 'bought' (for a pittance) a 2nd Role (spec) and specced out a Mage Healer and found that I enjoyed it more than just DPSing. From what I've seen of most other MMOs (including this one) that's the way it is, if you want to fill a different role you have to create a new character.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I need more time to play pencil and paper D&D (and other pnp RPGs) with my friends.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

From what I've seen of most other MMOs (including this one) that's the way it is, if you want to fill a different role you have to create a new character.

Many of the larger MMOs have some way to spec offensive/defensive for casters. LotR had it so you could swap out a few bonuses/stances (forgot what they are called) and go from +75% damage to +50% healing.

Warhammer online had it so you could respec, as most MMOs allow, though that means you can be good at one thing or another, it also focused on allowing dps or healing depending on your gear since all three healer trees had both dps and healing spells. So if you had int gear you damaged good, close to DPS classes but healed a pittance and if you had Wis gear you healed a lot and had good spell saves but had poor DPS.

Hybrids seem to be more common in modern games, where you are a healer that can DPS decently or a heavy DPS that can heal some and so on.
