Heroes of Newerth
xShadow:
Looks like HoN has gone F2P.
"Time to get your free game HoN! Heroes of Newerth is now free-to-play, operating under a new model designed to expand the HoN community and enhance the gameplay for our existing fan base. In just over a year’s time we’ve grown to be a community of 540,000 players – a direct testament to our game’s quality. With the transition to free-to-play we’re opening HoN up to new audiences as you can now easily introduce the game to your friends. To learn more about HoN or to create an account and download the game, visit http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/f2p_create.php
2 has a serious level of commitment to our current players to continuously improve both the game and their experience. We have gone to great lengths to ensure that the superior experience HoN delivers will remain untouched for our loyal fan base during and after the free-to-play transition. Existing players should read the following post for details on how the new model works and what to expect during the transition."
Just got this 5 hours ago in my email.
540 thousand... a drop in the bucket for LoL.
Let's see if their new model will work. Personally I"m kind of tempted to give it a shot. It's exactly like DoTA, except improved a bit, IIRC?

HoN stopped reflecting DotA a while ago. Something about copyright problems with them directly copying its patches. It was like 90%+ the same for a long while though. Probably still a bit below 90% the same. I havn't actually played HoN, so I can just trust second hand reports.

Having a patch note that simply says that and forces me to go into heros and look it up feels like something that is bad enough for me to skip considering a f2p game when comparing it with its competitors. Generally speaking I hate f2p games. :)

What competitors? There are no paid competitors to it. DoTA itself is simply a mod.
As for the last part of your first sentence/paragraph, you should probably have a go yourself before judging it. It's free now anyway. *Shrug*
I haven't tried it much myself though. I played it a bit during closed beta (or was it open? Don't remember anymore), but I don't remember what I actually did in it....
Sosseres:
A mod is a competitor with real games. Please tell those that made CS or DotA that it can't be. Both those mods are probably among the most played non-MMO games with a competitive scene and money involved.

... I never said that they can't be. I'm saying that DoTA is itself Free to Play. It's a mod, hence it's completely free. Perhaps different in the sense you CAN'T buy anything in it... but it's still a free to play "game".
There are currently no non-F2P competitors to HoN (unless you count the initial purchase of WC3... though tbh my not-quite-proper version of it started working on Battlenet <_<).
