Annual Sports Games
« on: July 22, 2011, 12:12:34 PM »
So, sad as it is, I am a big fan of sports games. Around this time of year, EA takes hundreds of dollars from my bank account. Year in and year out, I collect them. NCAA Football, Madden NFL Football, NHL, MLB, and I'm even thinking of picking up FIFA, now, as I have many friends that swear it's amazing.

Anyone else live in that closet with me? Is the summer for sports games on your consoles? I know many of the Euros probably don't play the American professional sports games - are there variations for European leagues out there?

It's not me - it's you.

I don't ever buy them. Last one was 97 edition or something like that, so I don't really know anything.

Here in Sweden there seems to be mostly football games (you call it soccer over there), like 90%. A few others seem to be sold as well, golf, tennis, winter sports and things like that. I recall seeing NHL a few times as well (hockey interest is pretty decent here).

Same here, I don't bother with them. The gameplay just doesn't appeal to me. Every game based on a teamsport amounts to you controlling whatever figure of your team has the ball (or equivalent item) and trying to get the ball into the other team's goal, meanwhile the AI does the remaining 95% by controlling every other figure. And it never changes, my sister got a version of FIFA well over a decade ago, for the original Playstation, since then the graphics have gotten better but other than that the games are the same every year.

Of course, the same might be said for pretty much every kind of game, but at least the levels look differently between different FPSs and RPGs and the weapons may do different amounts of damage. When it comes to the vast majority of sports games I don't see even that much variation.

Sport games are the same in the way that most fighting games are the same. Combos, controls, controllable characters and graphics change over time. Everything else is the same.

EA? Psh, 2K sports is where it's at. NBA 2K11 is the best damn sports game of this decade.
