Hey everyone, so the other day one of my friends asked me to get a few people to play some magic, but we are all so busy to find time to actually get together and play. So I was just wondering if anybody here played the online one and is it worth the money? Thanks

playing online is quite different from playing irl - you have a lot less information about what your opponent is going to do and interactions, especially on the stack, are slightly harder due to the limited communication channel.

i personally wouldn't shell out money for the online version as the social aspect of magic is diminished online and the free alternatives are nearly as good as the paid ones.

if you just want to play with your friends or some random guy a few games once a while i suggest downloading Cockatrice - easy to use, free and there are 50-150 games running at any time of the day.

There are several online variants that you could play. Obviously there is MODO, but that costs money. Is it worth the money? Sure: It has rules enforcement, constant tournaments, and a huge player base. However only really if you don't plan on playing too much irl.

Besides that there is Cockatrice, OCTGN, Apprentice, Lacky CCG, Mindless Automation (works on mac iirc), and MWS (used at Magic-League). There are several more, but those are the ones off the top of my head.

I have never played online but me and my friends still play real-life games every Sunday, normally.

I started the game around 3rd edition and had a whole bunch of alpha and beta at one point, including the Black Lotus and the Moxes. I sold a lot of my good cards years ago, but I picked up a bunch of new stuff recently when we started playing again.

OP, you should define what you mean when you say "online one". I can think of at least 4 online versions of MTG, and they all play very differently.

What I meant by online one was the actually online version where you still have to buy your decks and cards, the one actually made by the actual company. I tried using cockatrice, and I was pleased so Im pretty sure I am going to continue playing this one. ( I did not know that there was free alternatives to this)

MTG online is weird. But I guess it's better than nothing.

I started in 6th or 7th edition. I stopped around, Torment ish?

I mean, the thing that kills online for me is that I love the real thing. Teeka's Dragon and Shivan dragon were my most prized cards even though they never went into decks. The gloating factor was one of those things that I loved about MTG. We weren't really honest kids either back in the day. Cards used to change hands in our circle not purely by trading, but theft. lol. Try figuring that one out.

Other honorable mentions of my favourite cards include the Avatar of Woe, Gabriel Angelfire, Gerrard Capashen, Thorn Elemental..... Can't remember any more. lol.

But yeah, MTG is a great game, but the game itself wasn't the main reason I loved it.

Yea. The reason me and my friends picked it back up after not really playing since high school is not because its such an awesome game, its because its something most of already knew how to play (aside from some of the newer effects, but that wasn't so hard to get used to) and can have fun playing together over a few beers and random discussion.

yea i played for like a week in 4th grade and then like 2 years ago (now almost 25) got re introduced to it. Me and friends play countless hours of magic while drunk. Including buying boxes of boosters for draft tourneys of our own. Full decks we have something like 30 functional decks and at least half a dozen decks placed off to the side in the that deck is to fucked up and easy to stomp nuts with to use(stacked decks like stomp nuts ally deck and slivers and shit)

None of the planeswalkers that are owned are in the decks due to gayness.

I started playing Magic when it came out. Was too little to get the rules but i thought the cards looked cool, kept going after that till around 4th edition. There used to be an old video game for it on the PC, where you played certain "bosses/monsters" around a crappy world and collected cards. Some of the rules were actually enforced (surprisingly) but the damn game disappeared. Anyone remember it, or know the name?

i pplayed the old pc game on mylaptop for a while was kinda buggy but fun.

Shandalar is pretty god damn fun. I still play it every once in a while

Except that a majority of the darksteel cards are pretty bad and only a couple were used in very specific decks, plus I would personally consider it pretty mundane. Pitty too, Time Spiral and Ravnica were pretty amazing blocks that you missed.

not to mention that you can still bounce, exile, humble them (if they are creatures) and let them be sacrificed. plus reducing their toughness to zero (again, if they are creatures) still destroys them.

Impressed that this game is still going strong. I used to be way too addicted to it. Spending too much of my free time during school. What was great about it is the many places that let you can play at. There was a comic/bookstore ran by D&D fanatics, that attracted many good players. They often play D&D there after closing up shop and allowed us MtG players to stay too. Before then, we'd gather at odd places late at night, like White Castles.

As for theft, happens way too often. One guy had his whole backpack of cards disappear. I'd cry. During one convention there was a lady that kept playing footsies with me and snuggling, petting my white mox. No, that mox is mine, b. I've won one sanctioned tournament at a convention with a white speed deck. The side bar is what did the trick...land tax for land destruction decks, etc. Back before there were too many restrictions added. Well, I sold most all my betas just below peak and got the top of the line PC of that time.

exactly. destroy is just one way to kill a permanent.

A couple years ago I had a ton of older duel lands and other highly sought after eternal cards that I had bought for 200 dollars. I ended up selling them all for about 600, and then like TWO WEEKS afterwards the price for nearly every card I sold sky rocketed due to some new policies from WotC. I probably could have gotten about triple the price if I had just waited a little bit... FML.
