Game boy micro?
« on: July 29, 2011, 06:27:16 AM »
wondered if anyone here liked some retro gaming. I was considering buying a Game boy Advanced micro to play my old GBA games. I want to start playing the fire emblem series from the early games. I dont really want to play it on my DS lite, i figure a GBM would be pretty sweet. I want a NEW one. I hate buying used stuff, especially handhelds. However most of the ones i see on ebay and other places new are the japanese anniversery edition ones. Would those work just fine with US games? I believe theyre region free, but i was more concerned about chargers, ect working with US outlets, and if theres any menu or setup stuff that would be in JP only. Anyone happen to know?

I'm not sure GBAs are region free, actually (though don't quote me on that). And you probably would have problems with the charger too, unless you got an adapter. You shouldn't have to worry about any Japanese menus etc though, if it's anything like the GBA and GBA SD.

Honestly, my advice if you want to play GBA games in this day and age is to get an emulator. VisualBoy Advance is amazing, better than the real thing; it's what I use to play all my old GBA games.

but seriously though, i bet it can be bought for cheap in your local game stores, check those first.

EDIT: missed the region-free part. I think the gangster's right. although, check your local stores first.
some stores will probably let you test the unit on your games.

The GBA micro is completely region free. If you have a GBA game, it will play it.

Because I feel like it.

Yeah, I still have my GBA SP lying around somewhere, and it still works absolutely fine (though it feels tiny now, I remember it seeming fairly big). I never saw the point of the Micro though, the screen is too small to even see anything (2 inches... that's less than half the size of the screen on my phone), and as you say, no link cable support either.

2 things..
1 : i own a game gear ;P (WTF? lol i gotta watch that show.. whats the context for that gamegear?)
and 2:.. local gamestores? lol whats that? Gamestop has long since crushed anything like a local gamestore anywhere even remotely near here. Fucking gamestop. Plus i didn't want a used one anyway

anyway looking at the replies it seems that it should be region free, so thats good. But im not sure on the charger. WIll it work with a US outlet? Not sure if its 120V or 240V or what. I know UK stuff wont work here right. It also sounds like the GBA doesn't have any menu's to worry about for sure, but no ones sure about the micro

honestly i would like a GBA SP so i could link stuff up. I want to transfer fire emblem data, but i dont think you can do that with the GBA. The problem is a new GBA SP is like 200 bucks =P whereas a micro seems to be around 70-80 bucks. I actually heard the screen looks better on the micro too. That its crisper. I dont think the GBA will let you link up with the gamecube will it?

*sigh* not sure what to do, maybe i'll just stick with my ds lite for it, or play on the GBA player with the gamecube.

Honestly, my advice if you want to play GBA games in this day and age is to get an emulator. VisualBoy Advance is amazing, better than the real thing; it's what I use to play all my old GBA games.

blea i hate emulation. I like to actually own the cartridge and play it in my hands

You'll have to get an adapter to allow you to plug Japanese plugs into a US socket, since they use different standards. I don't know how easy they are to find, but I'm sure they exist. Try checking Amazon or somewhere.

You can transfer data with the GBA and GBA SP, but you can't with the micro at all, I believe. As for the screen, its crisper, but it is only 2/3 the size of the GBA/GBA SP's screens. I think you'd probably get a better experience playing it in the Gameboy player on your Gamecube than playing it on a GBA micro (though you can't transfer data with the GBA player either afaik), unless you need it to be portable, in which case your DS Lite is probably better. The GBA SP is the best of the lot, but given the price, it's not really worth it.

I don't know about a GB Micro, but a DS will not work if you use an adapter. That being said, the entry part is the same. Merely spend the time to buy the NORTH AMERICAN version and chuck out the other one if it doesn't work.

So essentially, if I bring my DS to Hong Kong or Britain, my own DS charger is junk. I need to either obtain a USB or the other charger to actually charge my DS.

Honestly speaking, AFAIK, any universal adapter with the right pin head should work fine.

I still have my Game Boy Micro, it's a great buy for playing GBA games on the go.  Recommended.
