Got copyright notice/ help with privacy in utorrent.
« on: July 30, 2011, 04:28:55 AM »
Well I got a thing from my isp about downloading Bleach season 3 from here at bakabt, which funny enough is the one series I have been getting for a friend instead of myself. The letter consisted of them thanking me for liking the anime, then saying I could watch it at Crunchyroll... huh. They also said I should delete my copy, blah blah blah. It didn't sound too harsh at all. I switched to a new computer before starting the site, and decided to go with utorrent instead of deluge as i was using before, and stupidly didn't configure it to give me some security. Major fail on my part, but even before I wasn't doing as much as I could have. Anyway I would like help getting protected. I am moving, and will be switching isps as a result in about a week (luckily enough), so I will start again then.

So far I have:
Gotten peerblock, and enabled the p2p, advertising, spyware, and education lists. (I know it is debated as to how helpful it is, but it can't hurt can it?)
Enabled encrypt my connection in utorrent, legacy connections is unchecked (I can't believe I didn't do this earlier)
Randomized the ports used

Anything else I should do? No matter how basic I would like to here it; I may have missed it. I know generally how proxies work, but they seem to always either cost money, really reduce speeds, or both, so that's a no unless there happens to be one that doesn't have a noticeable drop in speed and is free. Also I have heard vpn tossed around a bit, but it sounds like the same thing as a proxy. Also what is this about DHT networks? I saw one topic that mentioned you shouldn't have it checked, but I don't know the deal with it.

But yeah, any help would be nice. I hope I am on the right track at least.
I'm having a bit of trouble with picture quality connecting my laptop to my tv. If you can help: http://forums.bakabt.me/index.php?topic=38677.0

VPN is like proxy except it encrypts your entire network (or from my knowledge that's what it does).
so yeah, pretty positive it's more effective than proxy, get the bittorrent centric VPN's though.

Peerblock? seriously, screw that. blocking peers is not the point of P2P. besides, they will still likely know you're torrenting through other means. and that's outdated as far as i know.

The reason proxies/VPN are not free is because of bandwidth. you don't get high speed internet for free don't you? same applies to those.

Go for a VPN, that's the best solution that I will recommend.

A VPN routes your internet traffic via a remote server somewhere else, usually in another country. This means that to every website, torrent tracker, peer, etc you connect to, your real IP address will be hidden; they'll just see the VPN server. Additionally, proper VPNs also encrypt all the traffic between your PC and their server, so your ISP can't see what it is you're doing with your connection.

They do cost money, but if you look around, you can find some decent VPN services at a reasonable price. Try SwissVPN as a reasonable starting point, though there are others out there too.

As for Peerblock, yeah, it's completely useless, since it can't possibly identify dangerous IP addresses, and by the time they do get added to the list, they've usually already changed. It's more of a liability than a help, since it blocks so many safe IP addresses as well.

Anyway, the only real safe solution is to use a VPN. Even that's not perfect, but it is more than enough to protect against P2P monitoring; and there aren't really any other ways to do it.

Free solution: Connect to TOR or get another VPN solution (cons: if free, it might be slow)

If you are willing to pay few bucks each month: Get Usenet, not only do you get access to more than via torrent, especially if you look for less popular anime/movies/games, etc... but also it is completely safe for you.

If you want a very expensive solution: move to Sweden or other country with legal framework that protect user privacy and has good internet. Moving part would be the expensive one btw.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

traditional solution: search for a better torrent of the same anime.

common solution: VPN or ditch the ISP and grab a better one.
theres this VPN that i`m using for free, quite fast(could fill my line at most [2mbps]) though the problem with the "free" one is that it disconnects after 7mins, you could set it to reconnect if it disconnects via "redial if line is dropped" on 2nd tab under "redialing options". dunno if it truly hides your traffic though.

optional solution: go find a house on a different country, start a life there and aim big.

What are you? A Fallout quest? HAhahah

Anyways, another solution (but does cost $$ monthly) is to get a seedbox. Been using one for well over a year and a half and it's brought me nothing but joy and happiness. That, and my seedbox is located in some country where C&D letters will never reach... nor will any law enforcement will ever invade. The brilliant thing is that the people who host my seedbox don't even have my information since it's a paypal only transaction.

Learn to use IRC. Anime releases can be found on xdcc bots on Rizon's #news channel (or the group's channel), including DNU stuff here on bakabt. There are also bots hosting Scene stuff for you non anime needs.

You can also find Bleach releases somewhere like here: http://forums.kametsu.com/
(direct links, like MegaUpload)

You have to have a certain number of posts though, I forget how many it was.

No one really advised to take the tinfoil hat off...  Essentially, it's time to begin building the tinfoil fort?

Basic encryption settings in utorrent should be fine. The only other alternative is to make sure you're not falling for some major "traps" which IMO are pretty easy to notice anyways. (Leaked games, etc.)
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.

Huh... so apparently a vpn is a proxy on steroids, and peerblock is useless. Figures. Thanks for the help.

I would like to hear more about the seedbox thing, anybody like to explain? Also what is the deal with the DHT setting in utorrent. Somebody mentioned it, but I have no idea exactly what it is/does.
