VPN or Seedbox?
« on: August 06, 2011, 04:12:16 AM »
What would be better, a VPN or a Seedbox?

The internet here isn't very fast. I have a like 4MBit/1Mbit connection, so I can only upload at like 100-150kb/s and download at like 550kb/s. I also don't like leaving my computer on at night since the blue LED's give me horrible sleep. So, a seedbox would be very useful to me.

A VPN on the other hand, is more about anonymity and not getting caught downloading illegal crap, which I obviously do since I'm here.

I suppose the question really is... Would a seedbox basically provide the same protection as a VPN anyways? I mean, obviously I'd have to get a Swiss seedbox or something for their internet protection laws, but would the result basically be the same?

I mean, overall... The only real disadvantage I'm seeing with a seedbox is that my ISP would be able to see I'm FTPing said illegal content to myself... or is there some way around that? idk. That's why I'm posting this.

^ SFTP, or FTP over SSH tunnel.

You should always be using one or the other anyway.

end result on relying on a seedbox is that you`ll still have to download the stuffs from the seedbox, which makes you do more effort than needed and you`ll still get caught downloading the stuffs, unless you actually ship the software physically.

what?

i meant instruct the seedbox-man to burn the files into a disc or something and ship the stuffs directly. doubt the ISP could track that.

o_o

I i don't think there are "seedbox-men". Seedboxes are located in high speed datacenters as far as i know.
I doubt their tech team could be bothered to burn a user's files. much less ship them.

your point was wrong in the first place. your connection to the swarm via VPN is just as "secure" as your connection to the seedbox via SFTP. with a seedbox you can likely seed at much greater speeds as with your home connection and are guaranteed to max out your download speed when you actually grab the stuff from there. not to mention that you don't need to let your home pc run 24/7 to seed.
to sum it up it's actually less effort and a considerably higher gain.

So then. Now that that's decided...

Any good seedbox recommendations then? It wouldn't just be for this site. Well, I don't even really need it for this site, with my ratio as good as it is already. It wouldn't hurt though.

I'd prefer that, y'know, the seedbox doesn't check what's on their hdds, and uh... won't hand my info over to whoever sends them a complaint letter... xD

I used whatbox. Good service. It's an operation run by a What.CD member.

Woah. Lots of stupid posts in this thread. Good thing ignore exists. Too bad it doesn't work on the Post/Modify message page.

well sorry for having a shitty ISP that throttles my inthernet so bad that a badly seeded torrent could even saturate it to the point that i cant even load a page from google.com... sadly i cant profit from a seedbox, unless i wanted to upload/seed that badly. heh... /smirk

Thankfully, most of the rest of the world has a better connection than you. It'd be nice if you didn't assume everyone else has the same kind of connection you do.

Tiffanys - I believe there's a seedbox thread in the Help forum somewhere with some good suggestions.

exactly in those cases wouldn't it be much better if you don't need to saturate your upstream at all and can grab new episodes from your ftp server whenever you want, pause and resumable, at your maximum download speed without worrying about how to seed them back? you could still browse the web without your seeding chocking anything and you get one episode at a time so your limited download speed is used for the exact episode you want to watch at the moment.

i really don't give a fuck. you brought it up that your internet was shitty, not me.
i would really appreciate it if you could think before presenting some kind of counter argument.

it means "i got all i need, seeded more than 1:1 ratio so i`m fine here with my shitty net" plus you started the argument.
which proves my point XD

you suddenly butted in and said THAT, a literal insult. we already came to a conclusion but... pft, you get my point.

well anyway, drop the fight, i`d rather have my peace, thank you.

why do you even bother to read his posts? Almost all his posts in this subforum are nonsense. He's just pretending to be an expert on alot of things but his posts reveal he doesn't any clue on the matter.
