Check out the boards you're interested in, get used to the style and hang around in them if you want. You should probably make a roster and follow it.

In that order. Although my favorite was /r9k/ but it was taken down

I frequent the /v/ the most and /adv/ the least

people overstate how little vidya there is in /v/ I mean, there is plenty of off topic, for sure, but there is lots of /v/ in /v/
besides, they have pretty decent taste.

/a/ usually has good threads and they sometimes makes me laugh. But its HIGHLY RECOMMENDED NOT TO VISIT IT WHEN THE NEWEST EPISODE OF STEINS;GATE IS released.

/b/ is nowadays only doubles and /r/equesting random stuff, nothing good. Sometimes good good stuff, example "u laugh u loose" games

/r/ rarely delivers

/c/ /rs/ /f/ and /gif/ are my favorite places

/m/ (mecha) is cool. Gets trolled now and then, but most the posters have been helpful and are quick to answer. If you're into giant robots, space, sci-fi, cyberpunk, etc check it out.
