How. when and where did you learn to swim?
« on: August 07, 2011, 09:28:02 PM »
SO, How did you learn to swim? Who taught you?
When did you learn to swim? How old were you? what season it was?
AND, Where did you learn to swim? at pool? at beach? at swimming hall?

So, I think that gives you the Idea.... So....

Well, learnt by myself. yk. the tried to tech me to swim at school, but I never learned.
I was the last person in my class to learn how to swim. I've never been able to learn when I'm teached, I must learn everything by myself. So, I was 10 years old when I finaly learnt how to swim, and only because I wanted to do things everyone else did. Swim.

So, We could say I lerant to swim at beach on summer.

I was very young, like, not even five years old yet. It was probably summer and I was probably originally taught by my dad, I don't remember. I took swimming lessons until about 12, however, to become a better and stronger swimmer; I know most of the different strokes and how to do (regular) dives properly.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

took swim classes at the local pool when I was very young. I think for kids they had sea star class going to butterfly and some other animals up to penguin. then when your old enough you advance up a colour ladder. Don't know why they just didn't say beginner, advanced ect.
Any-who did that right up till white water level or something (didn't bother to take that one), which was basically lifeguard training at that point.
I haven't swam in almost 2 decades now. Hate the water and everything in it.

When life gives you lemons, you clone those lemons and make super lemons.

I was about 6 or so, I really can't remember a period in time in which I didn't know how to swim. I most likely learned it by myself or with my friends in a lake or a river in the middle of summer. I rarely swim during spring or fall, the water is bloody cold. It barely hits 18 or so degrees in the summer.

Took swimming classes (don't remember how old I was), I still didn't know how to swim.
I think a year or two after that our family went to visit some place. There was a small beach there, I learned to swim there (by trying to swim).

I mean whether someone has intensive coaching or not, swimming is usually like riding a bike. It just kinda dawns upon you how to do it when you are in the situation if you ask me. For it to hit somebody, it takes longer than others, and for other people it just never hits.

Personally, a week or so after my 6th birthday, my dad just took me to the neighborhood pool. He did all kinds of demostrations, told me all about it, and then tried to get me to follow along. I pretty vehemently refused to get anywhere near the water, so he kinda picked me up and tossed me in. Its kinda vauge now, but I remember being annoyed at how flapping my hands everwhere was getting water in my nose so I just decided to stop moving. Turn out I ended up floating on my back with my face above water. My dad yelled something about kicking my feet. I did. My dad yelled something hold your breath, turn over and do the same thing. I did. Voila, swimming  ;D

Probably tells you a lot about my dad, but hey he got the job done :)

Only managed to go to a water park once, i told dad i wanted to go back there only for him to throw a rude sarcastic remark that "It is not your house." after years pass now he wants to take me to swimming lessons in case i find myself in a aquatic environment... as usual i make sure not to talk to the shithead more than necessary.

I was tossed in a pool as a baby so I learnt the basics pretty early on. Then I had swimming lessons in primary school from the age of like, 8 or something. I ended up leaving with some basic personal survival skills; basically, I knew how to perform CPR and swim like 500m or something in full clothing by the age of about 12. I was a stronger swimmer in primary school then than I probably am now. How's that for fuckin' depressing? I could scull quite happily (though keeping feet up was always a pain) do butterfly (badly), constantly fucked up my dolphin, and could only ever seem to bellyflop off the top board, so I left without complete swimming skills but enough to see me through life.

I used to be a really weak swimmer when I were a wee lad. At the age of 7 my Father asked this very powerful Australian swimmer called Darren to teach me to swim. AFAIK It wasn't like a properly organised thing, this beast just took me under his wing and got me into swimming.
There must a be a reason for tanking things. And all must be in certain balance.
But what that balance is, must depend only on you, nobody else.

Considering that I live in Florida, I should probably know how to swim a lot better than I do, but I never had any kind of organized training that I can remember.  I've never been a strong swimmer, and even now I don't like being in water deeper than I can stand in without it going over my head.
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

For as long as I remember, I was always floating. Who taught me? Probably instinct.

To me a question like "how did you learn to swim?" is identical to "how did you learn to breath?". It's just a thing you do automatically. To me it's weird that some people can't float in the water, I mean, you guys can breathe, right? That air in the lungs keeps you floating.

As for swimming techniques, I learned them from older relatives, friends and school, but front stroke is the one that came naturally to me and i use it all the time when I swim.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

I was taught at around the age of 2. I lived on a lake my whole life and so became proficient.
I am not a fan of swimming, but I am good at it.

Learned in school, they had swimming classes. It was in fifth grade, when I was 9 years old. I was pretty bad at it  :-X. But after I got a hang of it I became quite good  :). And that took me a whole year  :-X.

My only problem was my breath control. I have chronic sinositus (from birth and I still do) so trying to regulate my breath under water is almost impossible for me, thus whenever I had swimming classes I used to swim the laps in single breaths.

As such I quickly get tired and can't go on for long.

That fact aside, I was quite a fast swimmer. (I can proudly say I have always lead my team to victory, I was the team captain many a times, with zero losses to this day  8)). But of course, I couldn't qualify for national school competition due to my breathing problems (kinda sad since swimming was the only sport in which I ever took part or interest in  :().

Well that was until 10th grade. It's been about four year since I quit swimming (due to various factors, one being availability of nice swimming pools or beaches where I live). I still retain my speed but my stamina and skills have somewhat degraded. Once I move out of the sorry place I live in now, I plan to get back my swimming skills and hopefully I find a solutions to my sinositus.

A bunch of friends picked me up on the beach and said to me "now you move your arms and legs like this or you will drown". I had fear of pools at the time so i never took swimming classes when i was young, but i did what they said and i started swimming. I was 5 at the time.

I only took swimming lessons at the age of 15 just to learn the all the swimming styles.

I learnt in school's swimming class. I have never liked swimming so I can just complete the minimums needed to pass school physical education.

I learned to float first and from there, I learned to peddle and then some basic swimming techniques at around the age of 7.

I was small (before elementary school, long long time ago when I spent all summers near by sea) and it was summer and most likely it was my dad who started to teach me swimming the rest most likely was done by myself just like with bike riding, but i think brother might have given me a hand there. And it most likely was the sea at the beginning and then river and lake. Later one perfected my swimming skills in school pool and sometime in lake I finally learned to swim on my back. Diving was the first thing I learned :D Still can not go into water without a diving into it at first.
