Stuck deciding between 2 GPUs
« on: August 16, 2011, 12:37:59 PM »
OS: Win 7 64bit Ultimate
CPU: i7 990x extreme ~3.46ghz
Ram: 24GB DDR3 1600 Kingston Hyperx
HDD: 1TB x2 7200RPM Raid 0

Now I'm stuck between choosing between 2x GTX 560s in SLI or Dual HD 6870s not in crossfire.
I've heard about performance issues on certain things regarding the GTX 560s.
Money isn't an issue. Which would perform better and last longer (and by how much)?

Money isn't an issue.
Why not 580s or 6970s? Why not 6990 or 590?

1x GTX560 Ti > 1x HD6870 by a visible margin.
1x GTX560 Ti > or < 1x HD6950, depends on the games.
1x GTX580 > 1x HD6970 any day, even the price is GTX580 > HD6970.
(click to show/hide)
plus you could grab another GTX580 or HD6970 to make it a dual card too... bah, stick to one card, saves you the headaches from problems and if multiple cards scales well on the games you're gonna play. common problems are if theres enough space between the GPU so it could suck air to cool it self, if the games you'll play scales well with multiple cards, micro stutters and so on.
not gonna play games? stick to onboard.

picking a stronger card depends on the resolution of your monitor, anything equal or below 1920x1080 you`ll only need 1(one) GTX560 Ti or HD6950.

Come on, why do you guys always have to do this.
When HSSDamian stated that money isn't an issue, it's obvious that it was about the price between 2 GTX 560 Ti and 2 HD6870.
I'd go with the 2X560, if you plan on doing single monitor.
But if you do have plans for 3+ monitor gaming, go with crossfire.

^ i already mentioned GTX560 Ti is faster than the HD6870 by a visible margin, the GTX560Ti is comparable to HD6950, depending on which games.

updated the charts.

I'm running 2x GTX 560 Ti (Factory Superclocked) EVGA. SLI-enabled. Excellent so far. I like them. If money is not an issue, then get the GTX 590 (1 is enough). Make sure you have a 750 watt power supply.

I would get the EVGA 460 2win card. Its a dual 460 GPU which only cost $370 (last time I checked) and its more powerful then a 580.

Go with 580s, I love mine (SLI).

Is there any reason for the hyper inflated cpu and ram? a 2600k will give you the same performance for much less..

2xGTX560 < 2xHD6870 < 2xGTX560Ti < 2xHD6950
GTX560 = HD6870 < GTX560Ti = HD6950
AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE 3.2 GHz
Powercolor ATi Radeon HD4870 1GB @ 800/950

Most LGA1155 boards won't give you native dual x16 x16 on the pci-e lanes, only dual x8 x8, which is why getting a LGA1336 is still a better option.

Last I heard dual 8x will not slow single gpu cards down.  That was about a year ago that I heard that and I don't have a source, but it might be worth looking into.

That's what I heard as well. LGA1155 obviously provides the best CPUs on the market, too.

1155 boards lack numbers everywhere. Most are limited to 6 SATA ports (4 SATA II, 2 SATA III) too, because of the chipset. I had to do a special search to find one with 8 ports total.

But in any case, waiting for LGA1356 to release is best, as they are supposed to release sometime in Q4 this year. Not to mention you're limited to Bloomfield and Gulftown i7s for 1366, whereas 1155 gives you more options in the Pentium area as well.

I have to wonder what LGA 2011 boards are going to offer aside from quad-channel RAM.

v Yes, we like our epeen. =P
Isn't LGA2011 supposed to release in Q4 2011 and tri-gate supposed to release in Q1 2012?

PCIe 3.0, tri-gate transistors, thunderbolt....

But still, bragging rights, you splurge on the specs because you CAN.  ;D

1356? Is this a typo? If not, that socket has been canned. It won't be released. Wait for 2011 or Ivy Bridge on 1155 instead

Not a typo. For real? I never heard about that. I guess that's what I get for getting all my information from Wikipedia.

why not just grab the one that interests you the most and call it quits?
