Video Games That Help You Learn Spanish
« on: August 18, 2011, 03:45:48 AM »
I love Slime Forest! Unfortunately, I live in Texas, and Japanese is somewhat useless here. I need to learn Spanish. When I use Google, I come across a bunch of crappy games that pretty much amount to flash cards. If I wanted something like that, I'd just "play" Rosetta Stone. Also, several sites suggest I could play emulated SNES games in Spanish, but this doesn't seem practical since I will have to stop playing the game to look up words constantly. I would prefer an rpg, somewhat like Slime Forest, that develops a progressive understanding. Does anybody know of a fun game that teaches you Spanish while you play?

Spanish is generally an "easy" language for english speakers to learn because its latin based...so you aren't gonna find too much, ntm you could just take a few semesters at your local community college to learn enough to be able to write/speak proficiently

Yes, Japanese is not even close to even a regional lingua franca status, so it is useless anywhere outside Japan.

Except the fact that English is a Germanic language while Spanish is Latin based.

What are you suggesting? Making a videogame?

Lol, my thought was to get one of those free sprite based rpg makers and make a game. It wouldn't need to be more advanced than an old NES game. On second thought though, I'm way too lazy/busy for that. If someone else wants to give it a shot, I'd be happy to partake in a minor development role.

Yeah I didn't hear that. At all.

Honestly though, something like Spanish is a lot easier to pick up if you're around it. Well that goes for all languages, typically the hardest part for English speakers with another language is genders. However, once you get the concept expanding it to other languages becomes monumentally easier.

So, move to Spain! Or just go and chill in a heavily Mexican populated area. You are in Texas, can't be that hard to find.

not racist

I'm gunna leave you anyway.

I believe that if you want to learn proper Spanish grammar, then you should learn Iberian Spanish and not Mexican Spanish. From what I heard the difference is minor like American compared to proper English, but noticeable.

Also to anyone having the idea of making an education game, look at this first:

Hell, anyone aspiring to make any game should take a look at all Extra Credits presentations.

Props for the Escapist reference.

More props from shouting out to Extra Credit, they're great, even without a full time artist.

However in my opinion the Mexican accent sounds better then the Spanish one. OPINION.

Sorry figured I should be clear. Some people like a Southern accent and they just annoy me to hell.

Whoops, the first link in my previous post was wrong.... although still relevant, I meant this one:

Opinion noted and not argued with.

I was thinking the exact same thing

la mejor forma de aprender español es practicandolo

if you feel comfortable with reading it why not get some anime subbed in spanish?

Good idea.

My teacher also encouraged us to watch Spanish shows with close caption with English subtitles.  Even without.  To become familiar with it by audio.

btw, Dora is cute.
