The best storyline in game history?

The best storyline in game history?

Well mine has to be either;
-Shadow of the Colossus
-Mass Effect
-Warcraft
-Assassins Creed

What are yours?
You think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted it.
I was born in it, built in it.
I didn't see the light until I was a man, by then, it was nothing but blinding.
The shadows betray you because they belong to me. - Bane

Planescape Torment

Aside from that, I also liked Arcanum and Baldur's Gate (1 & 2) storylines. KOTOR also has a nice plot twist.

Shadow of the Colossus didn't have any storyline. It was more like really good long sex: there wasn't much to say but it felt really really good.

Best Overall Story: Final Fantasy VII or X
Best Engaging Story: Pokemon Gold/Silver or their remakes
Best Storyline: Knights of the Old Republic
Best "What the fuck!?!" Moment:

Wouldn't a 4X game have the best storyline? Where you go from a village to an empire (or whatever relevant things that game use). Those are unique and has a fully fleshed out global story that you followed.

As for conventional storyline, I liked Homeworld and FFX.
There are also some other ones like Kana -Imouto that I loved.

Baldur's Gate I & II was pretty good as well.
C&C 1 was pretty nice, then it just went downhill.

Final fantasy kinda sucks balls compared to the ones I mentioned.

Though I only played FF10 and fell in love with it, it's not the best.

Also.

Altair has the best lines in game history. Best dialogue goes to AC1.

Is KOTOR too old to play now?
And can someone link it to me I don't know which one. I can't turn down bioware fo shizzles.

Osmo, I have to say none of the titles in your OP has struck me as having good storylines.

I second the Planescape Torment and Arcanum. :)

Also the best game history without use of cinematics: Half Life.

I think I have an idea why...

In the games you mention the story is being told in a good way, but the story itself is unoriginal. For example we have Mass Effect: the story being conveyed to the player really well, but the story itself is "save the galaxy from a great enemy".

I agree w/ the FFVII and KOTOR votes.

I also really enjoyed Mass Effect like the OP, but I agree with the above post.  The immersion factor was fantastic, but the story isn't anything new or shiny.

I think they got awesome story lines. I don't know why you think that.

Shadow of Colossus had no story... it was just you going around killing a bunch of ... Colossi (or Colossuses). There were underlying themes of the game, definitely... but the creators of the game themselves wanted to go for a minimalist point of view for both ICO and Shadows.

Mass Effect isn't all that memorable. I've played both of them numerous times (cause it's a fun game to play), but the story line isn't all that memorable.

Warcraft isn't what you call "Unique" in it's lore. Typical high fantasy story. The three main evil overlords: a dragon, a demon, a former prince. What do they all have in common? The destruction of the earth.

AS: Really? Someone from our present day is going back into the past (or reliving memories in cells?) to tell the storyline? I mean it's a cool concept, but hardly storyline gold.

The thing with SotC and ICO is that they have storylines but they are being told very differently than your normall game. That's one part of why they are so good.

You can't have the topic about best storylines and not mention Silent Hill 2. IMO it's THE best storyline ever.
Planescape: Torment
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy VII
Max Payne - it's not very complicated or original but it's complete. No plot holes (or almost none and small ones), great main character, great storytelling.
God of War - same as Max Payne combined with very fulfilling ending.
Mafia - good storyline combined with great atmosphere.
I also like Odin Sphere a lot.
Sanitarium has nice storyline.

Games I am yet to play/finish and I think they have potential to end up on the list above:
Tactics Ogre
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Final Fantasy V/IV
Xenogears

That's it for now.

Alright fine they are unoriginal....

What about Alan Wake. That was awesomeness.

The thing with Mass effect was the enemy. That's what I found intriguing. An enemy from dark space, sovereign. Beyond time, space and matter. From "Dark space" It is relative to the concept of the devil from a paralleled universe, which is scary for me.
And then the idea that they are the reason for civilizations reaching it's pinnacle, then destroying them, the reason unknown yet,  that the concept of civilizations are engineered by them to reach the pinnicle. It sets the universe on it's course so they have control over the growth of organic life.
Crazy fucking stuff.
It relates to the theory of Chariot of the Gods, which is an underlying theme to the assassins creed project.
Fucking awesomness!!!!!

Starcraft - A tale of lust for power and ultimate betrayal.
Grand Theft Auto IV - It's got comedy, tragedy, and bloodthirsty revenge.
Metal Gear Solid - People still make references to Shadow Moses from time to time. Epic.
Final Fantasy VII - The death of Aries will remain legendary for all time.
Half Life - Told from three different perspectives. Very kewl.
Dues Ex - Every time someone mentions it, somebody reinstalls it.
Myst Series - You discover a land where it is possible to create entire worlds through writing books. Once written, the book becomes a physical portal to that world.

Alan Wake was a great game, but story? You're kidding right? It's a narration, not a great story.

I have to throw Heavy Rain out there. I can't really tell if it's a good story or not. Again, mere narration.

The best story IMO has got to be the RE series. HOWEVER, that being said, the game don't really go into the story. The books that the RE series had were really interesting reads.

But, it would be like saying the Jurassic Park games had good story because it had a movie and a book.

Parasite Eve was a really cool premise.
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.

Starcraft 1 did indeed have a good plot.

I'm sensing a strong emphasis on the number.

Which I do agree with.

Xenogears and Planescape Torment for top spot imo =P
