I think they got awesome story lines. I don't know why you think that.

Shadow of Colossus had no story... it was just you going around killing a bunch of ... Colossi (or Colossuses). There were underlying themes of the game, definitely... but the creators of the game themselves wanted to go for a minimalist point of view for both ICO and Shadows.

Mass Effect isn't all that memorable. I've played both of them numerous times (cause it's a fun game to play), but the story line isn't all that memorable.

Warcraft isn't what you call "Unique" in it's lore. Typical high fantasy story. The three main evil overlords: a dragon, a demon, a former prince. What do they all have in common? The destruction of the earth.

AS: Really? Someone from our present day is going back into the past (or reliving memories in cells?) to tell the storyline? I mean it's a cool concept, but hardly storyline gold.

Final Fantasy 7,8,9,10.

Yus, fanboy.  :P

The thing with SotC and ICO is that they have storylines but they are being told very differently than your normall game. That's one part of why they are so good.

You can't have the topic about best storylines and not mention Silent Hill 2. IMO it's THE best storyline ever.
Planescape: Torment
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy VII
Max Payne - it's not very complicated or original but it's complete. No plot holes (or almost none and small ones), great main character, great storytelling.
God of War - same as Max Payne combined with very fulfilling ending.
Mafia - good storyline combined with great atmosphere.
I also like Odin Sphere a lot.
Sanitarium has nice storyline.

Games I am yet to play/finish and I think they have potential to end up on the list above:
Tactics Ogre
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Final Fantasy V/IV
Xenogears

That's it for now.

Alright fine they are unoriginal....

What about Alan Wake. That was awesomeness.

The thing with Mass effect was the enemy. That's what I found intriguing. An enemy from dark space, sovereign. Beyond time, space and matter. From "Dark space" It is relative to the concept of the devil from a paralleled universe, which is scary for me.
And then the idea that they are the reason for civilizations reaching it's pinnacle, then destroying them, the reason unknown yet,  that the concept of civilizations are engineered by them to reach the pinnicle. It sets the universe on it's course so they have control over the growth of organic life.
Crazy fucking stuff.
It relates to the theory of Chariot of the Gods, which is an underlying theme to the assassins creed project.
Fucking awesomness!!!!!

Semnae:
Starcraft - A tale of lust for power and ultimate betrayal.
Grand Theft Auto IV - It's got comedy, tragedy, and bloodthirsty revenge.
Metal Gear Solid - People still make references to Shadow Moses from time to time. Epic.
Final Fantasy VII - The death of Aries will remain legendary for all time.
Half Life - Told from three different perspectives. Very kewl.
Dues Ex - Every time someone mentions it, somebody reinstalls it.
Myst Series - You discover a land where it is possible to create entire worlds through writing books. Once written, the book becomes a physical portal to that world.
