1st place: Septerra Core (by far the best)
2nd place: Planescape: Torment

Planescape Torment

Aside from that, I also liked Arcanum and Baldur's Gate (1 & 2) storylines. KOTOR also has a nice plot twist.

I second the Planescape Torment and Arcanum. :)

Thirdeded.

Final Fantasy has shite storylines compared to those, especially once they left the SNES and went to the PlayStation. It was all pretty graphics and nice music with no gameplay or story.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

Have you ever played Final Fantasy VII? I nearly cried when Aeris died! I mean, I'm pretty sure I'm in denial about the crying part!

I have played FF VII. The story was trite, the characters were bland and uninteresting, I had zero emotional attachment to anyone; the only reason I gave a shit when Aeris died was because she's the healer and it was annoying, certainly not emotional; and the controls and gameplay sucked, like, hard.

[edit]Forgot to mention my biggest gripe: the world setting was fucking lame and poorly realized, full of inconsistencies and stupidity.

I read somewhere (IGN, I think) in a recent article that the next HL installment won't be 2ep3, but a full-length HL3. This makes me squee.

Commence squeeing... *EEEEEEEIIEEEEEIIIEEEEE*

If the next HL is even half of what HL2 was (pun not intended)... then I will shit myself. But knowing Valve (and Portal)... the game will be stellar.

ZOMG SORRY SO OFFTOPIC BUT:

Thiiiiissssss

In other words, still nothing, but at least it's news.  I know what you're talking about Froody, it's an interview with Gabe where he says they're moving toward "shorter and shorter development cycles" (god I have that memorized... so sad), like TF2, and where L4D is going atm.  Whatever Gabe, just continue the gd story already, because I'm dying inside.

Anyway, please continue to post game storylines that are < HL so that I may chuckle at them silently from my side of the interwebz, and sorry again for the mini-hijack.  :D

I mean, if they really have been working on DOTA 2 (even though DOTA wasn't an officially launched game) since the end of HL2: Ep2... That's 4 years since then and the only things that have been released are Portal 2 and DOTA 2 this fall (supposedly).

Come on Gabe! I want HL3 and more G-man! Seriously, like... I want to find out if the G-man is really Gordon from the future and Gordon is actually a talkative motherfucker.

As for "The best storyline in game history?" no idea, there's no way any of the games I've played merit that title...still haven't played a game that I HAD to finish because of the storyline...

Ofc so far in this thread I haven't played Septerra Core or Planescape, so maybe I'll give those a shot and I'll change my mind xD

also, lol at assassin's creed having a good story

Killer7 (Bizarre but it makes you think)
Heavy rain (The gameplay is shit but the story is undeniably good)
Persona 3 (I just like it i don't really know why)
Bioshock (Best twist ever)
Metal gear solid 1-4 (Really complex story and great characters)

I have played FF VII. The story was trite, the characters were bland and uninteresting, I had zero emotional attachment to anyone; the only reason I gave a shit when Aeris died was because she's the healer and it was annoying, certainly not emotional; and the controls and gameplay sucked, like, hard.

Assassin's Creed DOES have a good story. I didn't put it in my own list, but it is definitely good.

It isn't even one of the best final fantasy games.
Nah, it's third-best imo, preceded by FF6 and 4.

Funny, I feel the same about characters in FFVI. Japanese stories ride heavily on characters so when you don't like them the whole storyline is ruined. The only characters I liked in FFVI were Celes, Mash and maybe Edgar. I was greatly disappointed with the rest, especially with Cefca.

Actually, FFVII became a lot more enjoyable for me after Aeris died. That's because she was the only character that I not only disliked but also HATED in FFVII. So I was really happy when Seph killed her for good.

Dota 2 is next year, don't know when yet. More slots in the beta is this fall.

True, but original stories hold more value imo. Amnesia was heavily influenced directly by various horror novels from the Lovecraft era.

Original in the way you are inferring don't exist.  Every story is influenced by something, they always follow some kind of trend.  If you mean stories/plots that are not over used hold more value, I agree.

Amnesia was good and being influenced by Lovecraft does not decrease value at all.
heavy rain, borderlands, portal 2, and dragon age: origins were good somewhat recent game stories I played.  I don't play that many games though.
