HP quits consumer market

Always wondered myself why nobody started selling laptop parts yet and standardized the sizes. Sure, a bit more tricky to build because of the space limitations, but it's doable.

Also ever since US dollar plunged from valuable currency to toilet paper over the last decade, I have been ordering cheap parts from US from this site:

www.performance-pcs.com

They have so much awesome stuff there...

Because its cheap what would an update bring? It already browses the web and does everything any other tablet would do that someone would pay 500$ for. and the people at xda are hard at work trying to port android over to it and if that happens then you get your updates. at 99$ its just too good to pass up.

What the consumer wants and a corporation wants are usually two separate things.  There is no business profit advantage to corporations for standardizing form factors for external case compatibility.  Ignoring size and weight and to exaggerate the situation, would any company sell a product chassis that lasts forever and can be upgraded with parts or bezels from a competitor?  You can imagine how much more profit the companies would make if every desktop type PC had parts that could not be used with a different company brand.  There's no need for them to make the same "mistake" with laptops that happened with desktop units.  The other thing going against standardization is that laptop form factors are still evolving towards lighter weight and monolithic bodies that require the fan to be on all the time.  If there was standardization that would not threaten profitability, it would be to have a small metal plate on the bottom to which an external cooling pad (with heat pipes) could be fastened to.  The heat would thus be removed from the unit thus allowing the internal graphic card to run cooler without hitting 80 degree centigrade or more as they do now.[/quote]

Machiavellian tactics occurred in order to accomplish ideological goals:

During the Reagan era, a friend and former colleague, a professor of American history, was invited to the deliberations of a Washington think-tank that provided policy direction for the Republican Party. As they discussed growing the debt and increasing the deficit, he was flabbergasted: “Are you not the party of balanced budgets and debt elimination?” The reply was unequivocal, “Our goal is to grow the deficit as much as possible in order to create political space to eliminate government-funded programming. Until then, we want high deficits while lobbying for a balanced budget — and promoting social program cuts as the only solution.”
