And finally, what's with the obsession with "Slice of Life" stuff? I don't understand building up everyday things, it might just be a point of view thing or I suspect I might be missing something. Any thoughts?

Slice of life is a perfect genre because it's one of the anime genres that people can relate to very easily (in turn, makes the anime more memorable because it relates to your own life). That's why slice of life animes are great.

For once, we agree. SoL is a great genre of anime because some shows of SoL can make you think of your own life (Lucky Star), it can relate to you in musical terms (K-ON), it can relate to your high school life (Azumanga Daioh), and it can make you think of your own best friend (Nichijou). Weird thing is, I love all of these shows.

TBH Slice-of-life isnt my favorite genre. . .I do find a lot of those animes funny and enjoy a couple of laughs but the lack of a story sometimes stresses me out. . .I mean when I saw lucky star for the first time I was like "WTF?" like seriously. . .what is this thing about?
its about nothing!

and some of the best animes I've seen leave a little fantasy behind you know "aw man I wish I was piloting that mecha" or "ah fuck man I wish I had a fking geass!"  or something like a little supernatural

Well, even though it's opinion based... look at great shows that aren't anime related and can be placed in the "Slice of Life" genre: Seinfeld, Curb your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, The Office, Friends, etc. etc.

Those were all really popular shows that could be classified as Slice of Life. I don't see why it wouldn't be as popular or as good in anime. Obviously, it's just my opinion. :P

I mean the fact that they tend to have abnormally long arms and legs and lean forward at the waist to accentuate this even more. Why? This one is typically with guys.

only clamp has this from what i've observed. and "lean forward at the waist"?
I see that in japanese live action too. probably a cultural thing.
Have a look at the KimiTodo male character designs, Ryuu for example  ;)

That's a very valid point. Funny enough, I don't watch any of those shows, sitcoms also bore me :D

I'm gunna leave you anyway.

Lol no. But then again I've also never seen someone punch someone else like 50 feet in the air and then that person, after crash landing, get up and fight again.

Honestly. What?

The only thing i've ever complained about anime (well, besides ecchi in general but i'm not going there) is the "girl punches guy to the moon, comes back like nothing" scene (thank you Love Hina for exploiting this). Really?

Haha I suppose the argument can be used, the impossible is almost always more captivating then the possible.

So there's been a bunch of motifs in Anime's that I've seen recently, and I think it's just Japanese culture that I don't get cause, well the only Asians I have contact with irl are from HK and Taiwan. Right so the whole thing with oddly colored hair (pink, green, like who's BORN with that) is a bit weird but not really anything major.

Next there's the really oddly proportioned bodies that Anime characters have, and no, I don't mean the whole "13 years old and tits that are huge" thing. I mean the fact that they tend to have abnormally long arms and legs and lean forward at the waist to accentuate this even more. Why? This one is typically with guys.

And finally, what's with the obsession with "Slice of Life" stuff? I don't understand building up everyday things, it might just be a point of view thing or I suspect I might be missing something. Any thoughts?

Oh yeah, this might be in the wrong section, I'm sorry if it is, delete/tell me and I'll move it.

i don't really get the colored hair either, but its there and i have gotten used to it lol just like if you have ever seen school life anime with robots where nobody treats it differently lol

i know what you mean with the body proportions what comes to mind is DBZ and how they stand like that well they stand like slouched back like arced kinda its odd. but seems cool ha

and as far as the slice of life stuff, im a pretty big fan of school life/slice of life anime. i guess its kinda just different from watching fantasy stuff. i mean its still fantasy but its more realistic. i guess some people can relate to them or as far as we know some of the things happening in those anime may have been influenced by the artists own real life experiences.

CLAMP is an all-female Japanese manga artist group that formed in the mid 1980s.

I think we have enough artists for the guys, so don't mind seeing what the women artists' prefer.  It's a good to have variety than all having the same style, such as Disney.

I have some similar wonderings as OP or maybe not that similar but wonder about slice of life things I oberve in anime vs reality.
Im just curious wether its some Anime thing or if all these supersitious things are based on reality in japan.

Sneasing
Is it common in real japanese life that you think somone else is talking about you if you snease?

Sickness
Is there normaly somone sitting next to you placing a towel on your forehead and serving you rice porridge if you´re sick in japan?

Bathing
Is it normal to always play pingpong and drink a bottle of milk after having a hot bath in japan?

There are probably more things I cant think of right now that I always notice and wondered wether they are real culture or anime culture.

I don't see why it's hard to discern cliche skits (mostly used for comedy) from real life.  Like we know it's not true that there's always one person in a group of friends that is super rich and has a summer beach house to go to.

As for the western culture, dropping a banana peel on the ground will not force someone to fall.  Nor will doing bad things come right back at you.

you sure hate disney, don't you? Mickey mouse raped you in Disneyland?

lame jokes aside, to cite an easy example none of the Disney Princesses have the same body type.
and Disney's character design over the years have a rather great variance. no need to cite examples, really.

(click to show/hide)

what the hell is "Sneasing"?

Yes, there's also this thing called Kool Fever.
also, it should be obvious that porridge is easy to eat and healthy(depending on what you put in it
so it's perfect for sick people. >_>

I wouldn't know, but given it's prevalence it might be. even if it's just real people imitating it from anime, lol.
