ntalk looks pretty nice.

nettalk ---> free, open-source, user-friendly, light, full-functionality. best choice imo.

Used irssi for a while, but then switched to weechat because it has a lot less setup to do and is configurable in a bunch more languages than Perl.

I've only ever really been interested in terminal clients because I run irc in a screen session on a server.

Okay, i just headdesked. Nettalk has trouble with xdcc'ing unicode stuff.
will try to get in touch with their devels to ask about the unicode problem.
