I don't know if it is really illegal or not, but they will lose at least a little business over this even if things die down quickly, and they've already lost a lot of PC gamers anyway. I stopped buying awhile ago for other reasons.
Also OnLive isn't much of a competitor, it's a game streaming service that doesn't technically offer a real copy of the game(digital or othnerwise). It's a new service that partnered with Square, who ships and sells the game. Hardly warranted IMO.

True, it is a principal matter. Personally speaking, I wouldn't want my games being opened for any reason. If my game copy was opened to be switched out with a censored version of the game, I would demand to have the original copy back. If it's something as trivial as removing a code that would allow me to get a digital version of the game on a download client I will never use... I would thank them for taking care of the trash... but don't fucking do it again because I want my games unopened.
Yes, Gamestop broke some trust there. If they do this with my copy of SWTOR (only PC game I plan on getting in the foreseeable future) and remove an Origins code to redeem a digital copy... I would be very pissed and I would understand that where those customers are coming from. Then again, I would getting mad over nothing because I really don't want to USE Origins in the first place (cause of their whole Big Brother clause in Origins that allows them to see EVERYTHING on your computer... including stuff you download and programs you use). Will it stop Gamestop from removing promotions from the PC version of the game? Probably not... but it's Square's fault for putting a promotion like that in their game. Legally, Gamestop "bought" those games from Square... so now it's their right to remove the promotion. Ultimately, it's the end user (well, PC users... my PS3 copy was intact when I bought it) that will decide whether this is acceptable or not.

Can't argue with that part, but aside from consumer opinion or whether they have the right, it just seems like a bad, unprofessional business practice to sell items new that aren't factory sealed. I'm sure most publishers expect their games to be sold as is, and i wouldn't be surprised if something like this resulted in Square Enix forcing Gamestop into a sort of contract before filling their orders or limiting business with them(it's not like theirs any shortage of retailers and Gamestop has never been PC gamer friendly).

Gamestop dealt with the problem the only way they know. They've pulled all PC versions of the game from their shelves so they don't have to deal with it. I'm guessing anyone that preordered the PC version of the game (who havn't picked it up yet) will get their money back. Will it ruin their business? Probably not... they are one of the biggest game stores that offer a used game program. Have I been a satisfied customer for the last couple of years? I would say so. Then again, I would lose trust in them if they start opening up my copy of NEW games too... Like I said, if they open my copy of SWTOR, for whatever reason, I will be pissed off. I do agree that Gamestop isn't PC friendly AT ALL. They may be good for preorders of PC games... but don't rely on them (especially since Steam is so much better at the PC market now than most retailers).
newy:
Square Enix is accepting their policy. And they removed the coupons/removed them from their shelves simply because they are also starting a similar venture that is OnLive.
VIVIsectVI:
Can't you just redownloaded the game digitally using Steam?
