Your favorite underrated games.
« on: August 27, 2011, 09:41:48 PM »
Hey guys. I wanted share my favorite underrated games with you and see what games are out there that I might have overlooked that deserve looking into.

3) Just Cause 2 - The game might have a ridiculous story but it suck me in for weeks. The story is just an excuse to blow stuff up, the dialog is real bad and the voice acting is laughable... but goddamn does the gameplay makes up for it! The main character has a grappling hook that can catapult you anywhere and infinite parachutes, creating a very mobile character and very interesting and fresh gameplay. The game takes place in a fictional archipelago nation called Panau which is huge. The game looks amazing on the PS3 but its even more breathtaking on a high-end PC. Its dirt cheap on steam and you can find it real cheap for PS3/Xbox360 nowadays. Really worth a look, specially for lovers of open-world games.

2) Darksiders - I loved Darksiders, the game does have some gameplay issues but they don't distract from an overall great experience. The game world is vibrant and varied with art direction by legendary comic book penciler Joe Madureira that gives the characters a very distinct stylized look. The story is great and the voice acting is stellar with Mark Hamill on a supporting role and that bloke what played Illidan in World of Borecraft playing the main character. When I finished the game I remembering hoping this it to became a franchise and I got my wish when Darksiders 2 was announced. I still don't forgive Joe Mad for not finishing Battle Chasers, that C...

1) Silver - Many of you wont remember this game, it passed unnoticed when it came out, it was a fully voice acted PC RPG, which was impressive for the year it came out, 1999. The game might lack the depth and length of classic PC RPGs like Baldur's Gate, but it made up for it in innovative gameplay and by sucking you in with one of the most amazing game soundtracks ever. Instead of being a traditional point and click hack'n'slash, you use your mouse to move but when you press control, your mouse movements are translated into swings, for me the gameplay was more satisfying than thee loot mechanic of Diablo 2 and that's saying a lot. The game was ported to dreamcast and It doesnt run on modern OSs (it ran on Win95/98). I'm hopping for the day GOG.com adds this game to their catalog because thats the day I'm finally gonna justify creating a GOG account.

How about you guys? Any hidden gems?

3. Dead Space + Dead Space 2. Survival horror done right.

2. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. By far the best spy/sneaking game ever. I have so much fun picking off baddies one by one and seeing their friends get all scared.

1. Star Wars: Galactic Battleground + Clone Campaigns. By far one of the coolest RTS's even til today. It's just based on Age of Empires II, but it has all Star Wars factions and units. There are the freakin wookies for pete's sake!

I think you've got something backwards here.  At first, I thought I might be drunk (not that I'm not).  Then I remembered that there are no wookies in Dead Space.
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

OMG, I Ctrl-x the first and third one cause I thought SW: GB was a lot more underrated than Dead Space

Dark Reign. I know everyone went bonkers for Star Craft, but I really loved playing Dark Reign. Sure, some people might think the balancing was borked, but it was fun.

Star Wars: Republic Commando
Probably the best non-RPG Star Wars game I've played. Tons of fun squad-based gameplay, good voice acting, memorable characters, and an interesting plot which set up Episode III nicely.

Spartan: Total Warrior
Not the best story but one of the most addicting hack and slash games I've played. King Leonidas makes an appearance here, so that boosts its awesomeness factor by a hundredfold.

Warzone 2100
Haegemonia: Legions of Iron

Both of them are RTS with some very unique elements.
Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason.

Anachronox.  One of my top 5 all-time favorite RPG's, but people hear the title and say "What?  Final Fantasy:  Anachronox?  I never heard of that one.  Is it after X?  That's the best RPG ever, imo."

Wish someone hadn't stolen my Ephemeral Fantasia disc so I could play again.

Have Dead Space in my backlog, too many games so little time. :(
Is the multiplayer on Dead Space 2 anything good? Or is it just a tacked-on piece of crap like Bioshock 2's multiplayer?

[Insert obligatory mention of Beyond Good and Evil] I still play that game from time to time.

1) Silver - Many of you wont remember this game...

I remember, and it was a really good game.

Whisper of a Rose
Phantasmagoria
Diamonds in the Rough (not quite underrated because the reviewers were like "OMG THIS GAME IS SO GOOD", just not well known)

See, the problem with this thread is that there is no real way to tell if those games are underrated. I assure you, DS, DS2 and SC:CT are not underrated. Dunno about SW:GB because I've never heard of it.

I don't really know if those are underrated but I rarely see someone mention them:
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth - decent FPS with nice atmosphere
Sanitarium - nice horror adventure game with good storyline
Colosseum: Road to Freedom - you're a gladiator, that should explain everything
X-Men 2: Wolverine's Revenge - nice adventure/action game in times when Wolverine wasn't immortal yet
The Getaway: Black Monday - kind of like GTA in London and kind of not
EA MMA - once you change steering to button control and give it a chance it is really good

underrated?
well lets see who remember Ugh!  a really old school game which i remember playing when i was a kid.

for info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugh!
for download: http://www.acid-play.com/download/ugh

Do i need to say it can run from a floppy disk?

Ps: Mods don't delete the link for download before reading wiki and checking when it was released.

lol, I used to play that all the time back when I had a 500mb harddrive and could only play small freeware games

I'd say my favorite underrated game is:
Phantom Dust

Dead Space 1+2 only sold around 3 million copies combined. Both of those games should of easily made 3 million in sales EACH. It was definitely an underrated game.

SC:CT only sold 2 million copies when that was the BEST (and I mean this), THE BEST spy infiltration game (until more recently Deus Ex). I would play that game into the wee hours of the morning. The only thing is, people didn't really talk about it much (and I have a reputation around the local gamer spots). It's not that popular of a game even though it deserves a lot more attention from Ubisoft (the last two games sucked).

They are definitely not underrated... they average at about 88-90% on reviews. They got like 10 awards from important gaming sites/magazines each.

Also, Dink Smallwood! I loved that game! I played the demo 10 times =___=
