Oh God, X-2 doesn't deserve the shit it gets. Sure, the storyline and characters are raped to hell and back, but the game itself is pretty solid and has a fantastic battle system.

The storyline was not that bad. It just had its moments of randomness for nicer words.  If it was taken out it probably would have been better. Other than that I liked all those characters from x-2.  Battle system was really good dress spheres were good for that game but probably not others even though it was modified for xiii. If you really think about it its more to the same to xiii

Shadow Hearts
Ephemeral Fantasia

Wish someone hadn't stolen my Ephemeral Fantasia disc so I could play again.

...Ephemeral Fantasia? You mean... you miss that game? D: That game could have been so much fun... Instead, I spent all my time yelling at the screen, totally lost regardless of the area's map status, never making it to any event on time because I was so busy being completely lost, and just being ridiculously frustrated that as soon as I'd manage to get anywhere or do anything, OH LOOK, MY FIVE DAYS ARE UP. SDFKGHSZKDLJGHD;JDGHLDFSKJGHKDSLGH That game was a total punch in the face - so much so that even with a walkthrough I printed out, I couldn't manage to do more than recruit like two people. Sooooo much hate. The storyline was AMAZING though, and the fights were fun - it's just that after you've played for 20 hours and gotten nowhere, it becomes considerably less fun. X.x

Let's see, underrated games... Well, I generally don't know how games are rated outside of my own little world, so though I know the general 'Final Fantasy is popular' and 'everyone knows what Zelda is', I'm not sure what games may have been underrated - especially since I only play RPGs for the most part. I'm going to say Eternal Sonata, definitely. I don't have a PS3, so I only got to play a little of it, but the concept was facinating and it was so amazing to play with and as Chopin. <3 Uh, I was a pretty big fan of Legend of Legaia. Oooo, Brave Fencer Musashi was a real riot, too. Legend of Dragoon was awesome, though the English was pretty consistently just this side of not quite right. Not enough people I have talked to have played Disgaea 2 - that game is freaking hilarious, and it was the first SRPG I played that had really enjoyable combat instead of frustrating obnoxiousness. (SO MUCH HATE for the FF Tactics battle system. Seriously.) But Disgaea 2 is fun and entertaining and has lots of feasible options instead of a ton of useless ones. Plus, the satire and dark humor is everywhere and the characters are too much fun. Taro is my favorite! <3 I'm also a big fan of RPGs that dare to ditch the sword. The main character uses his fists. It's awesome. Plus, there are talking penguins that explode when you throw them! Who wouldn't love that?!

Magic and Mayhem, Warlords 3 (quite old but still play them), A.I.M. 1/2.

If there was a topic seriously overrated games - I'd say CS.

Space sims that weren't Freespace...

....just space sims in general. Whatever happened to em?!
The X series is still alive and kicking, new installment is scheduler for this year.

As for underrated games, or ones that quickly faded away, I'd say Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. A very good RPG game with good graphics and feel that kinda went unnoticed.
Also, Omikron: The Nomad Soul was an awesome game which linked many different genres together and was really immersive (not to mention a David Bowie soundtrack), but hadrly anyone remebers it.

Also, I wouldn't call the Total War series underrated - every game in the series was very well received and had good reviews and was a "big", highly advertised release. However, these are kinda niche games, requiring a long time investment, which the average Joe isn't prone to making, so people complete a campaign or two and forget about the game. However, despite that, the community is very much alive, even for older titles.

Guys, obscure != underrated. If a game sold less than expected but most of those who did buy it loved it, it is not underrated.

Hitman: Contracts - Between the shining praise that Silent Assassin and Bloodmoney received, this was generally considered less thrilling and too similar to Silent Assassin. So what, I say. Imo it was every bit as good as Silent Assassin and had more intricate levels to boot.

Saboteur - Don't understand why this didn't do well at all. It was fun.

Delta Force: Black Hawk Down - This was a pretty great fps, specially considering it's from 2003. Actually needed some form of strategy too (gasp). It received a lot of flak.

Prince of Persia : Forgotten Sands - I liked it, dunno about you guys. I didn't see why reviewers called it mediocre.

+1

Started playing it expecting laggy gameplay and a bad story. Turned out to be the most fun I've had playing a stealth game not named Assassin's Creed or Splinter Cell.

Prolly Vampire: Bloodlines, as mentioned a bit above. In it's time it had pretty good graphic and was one of the most original RPGs ever.

Also Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity and Divine Divinity II. It's great and on par with RPGs which had way  bigger budget, yet it was and is rather unnoticed and literally under-rated in most reviews, made me even though that some of the writers have only watched trailer.

TVM:B is not underrated. It has mainly positive reviews and is quite popular (not mainstream ofcourse, but still). The only faults in reviews are bugs and this game is bugged as hell. If not for an unofficial patch it would be barely playable.

I forgot to mention Shinobido: Way of the Ninja. It appears it wasn't even released in USA. It is a very fun game. Sure it has few flaws but nonetheless a very good game. Better than Tenchu series I'd say.

I'm not sure how underrated 'Sonic 3D Blast' is to fans, but it definitely got panned by industry critics. I personally really liked it.
