Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon | Horizon on the Middle of Nowhere [Series]
Havoc10K:
@zherok
You know, I said I wouldn't argue, but in the first season every character introduced was fighting against the Testament union, so you're saying them being introduced and fighting has no merit to the plot ?
Masazumi forced the enemy commander to move, cancelling his Armament of Sin, The shrine maiden in the meantime transferred Toori's happiness as power source to the allied troops, Adelle ... was a tank shield and the guy that's super strong was the only one able to move her while everything was shooting at her armor, the knight was defending the Viceroy (Toori) on his approach to Horizon's cell, Honda was defending the other part and fought magnificently (while being silly as usual) and defeated the commander of Espania Forces (to what means he bears Japanese name while being Spanish is not known to me but oh well it was funny anyway) while the Techno Hex girls were fighting against the Tes Espania's God of War (possibly the mightiest manned Vehicle in terms of technological advancement) and the engineering club prez was also fighting, Incubus and Poring guys were out of combat, as well as Kimi (Toori's sister)
Even the ninja guy was fighting, and the shy blind girl couldn't fight in that battle, the author guy was playing the role of commander.
So yeah, just because nearly all of the introduced characters were taking a big part in the major scene means they detract from the plot.
Your point is void.
@abc cuz
Yeah well it appears some people don't like boobs, looks like a world without boobs is their grand dream.
@zherok again.
this is a discussion thread for anime, so I won't stop you from discussing it, but if you have a problem with everything in the show then why bother watching it ?
I mean, when I don't like something that's pissing me off, i just drop.
At the very least you agreed that the story is good but seriously, you can't expect a show with girls that doesn't have a bit of echii about it, even in K-On, which was purely slice of life, there was echii, Azumanga Daioh, a great slice of life comedy also had echii, where are girls in anime, there will be some echii, and the level in this show is practically normal. If boobs are a bother to you, stop watching shows with girls in them.
This is all I have to say in this topic, I would very much like to see some real discussion instead of throwing meat and critiques at points that are obvious and commonplace in EVERY anime. Large cast is not bad when it's done properly. And in this title it is done in an excellent way.

--- Quote from: nodame-chan on July 20, 2012, 07:40:55 AM ---They mustn't. Just really, you bring forward weak points. Like ok, there is a huge boob art, what's wrong with that? There's a lot of shounen, what's wrong with that either??? I'm just glad to see more shounen. And about large cast. So what? They all have a meaning to be out there. Of course nobody permits you to not like it, but if YOU didn't like it, it doesn't make anime any bad.

I bring them up because I think they detract from the plot. You're free to like character art that features the watermelon as the basic unit for breast size, but it comes off as lazy to me, and they're as incredibly unsubtle about exploiting it as much as possible. They're not slyly inserting that content in, it just eats up a large chunk of the run time.
Which again, is an issue because they've got such a huge backdrop to begin with. If you're going to set up the mythology, you probably don't need to pad out the entire 13 episodes with gigantic boobs while STILL having to drop exposition bombs in order to get the plot across. I don't think it's unreasonable to have some priorities with story development.
The large cast again has the same issue. A lot of them aren't important, yet still eat up more screen time that could go to the characters that are actually getting things done. That's kinda silly. A lot of these characters are literally one trick wonders. They'll get used for one major plot device and then sink back into the rest of the class. That's seriously what a lot of them did in the first season. Some of them didn't even get that. There's a reason why most anime set in a particular classroom don't actually flesh out every single member of the class; it leaves you with less time to develop the characters that actually matter.
--- End quote ---
And still, please remember that only some of the characters have those huge breasts. Take for example Horizon, or the witches, etc etc. No need to mention it all the time.
The thing that I like the most in this anime is that they use real historical figure-based characters. Which is only laudable. And IMHO the giant boob art is just very fitting if we consider the fact that Toori was naked during the most time of the show. It adds some spices to the show.
Now again about large cast. I already said long ago I didn't like that there are so many characters in the show, cuz it was confusing. However, I can see that they are trying to make the others important too. And I have a feeling that in this second season many of them will play a great part. No need to make conclusions until the anime is over.
Anyways, I like this anime and enjoy it greatly. You are free to have your own opinion about it, but still, that doesn't make this anime any bad.

Merely showing up doesn't suddenly make them all terribly integral to the plot. They aren't.
A lot of the characters are really only used for one major scene or two. The shows too short to support a gigantic cast. I'm arguing it'd have been tighter if there were less characters. Or more episodes. And another season doesn't really solve it since it's still compacting arcs into 13 episode sets.

It's not a binary thing. It's not like you have no boobs, or volleyballs. I don't think the large breasted characters were particularly well drawn. It just looks absurd to me. It's an acquired taste, but I'm not sure it'd be easy to argue it's a particularly artistic decision to draw them that way either.

It didn't piss me off, I've said several times it was merely meh. It'd have to try far harder to actually irritate me. The closest it comes is never really reaching it's potential, but all in all it was merely average.

There you go again with the binary argument. You don't have to have an absolute extreme of a particular element or have none of it altogether. And in a show with so much exposition, maybe spend less time on the boob humor and more time explaining the rather complicated world they've set up. I don't think that's ridiculous to expect. There are plenty of other ecchi shows that get away with the same level of ecchi content, but they're going with lighter stories to begin with and not dumping exposition in between.
Nowhere have I ever argued having ecchi content is some sort of death sentence. I argued that if it was going to have so much exposition, maybe spend more time on that instead of boob groping.

I don't know what you watch where it's either on or off. I think they wasted a lot of time with things that didn't matter, and pushed the plot into the background. Read the summery of the series off anidb and tell me how much of that is really integral to what actually happens in the first 13 episodes. Even with the things that do get resolved, the story setting is primarily just background detail.
I didn't see the series really use it's large cast particularly well. Again I don't know how they're used in the light novels, but the anime could have done without a number of characters. It's not just about using them, it's about whether the time spent introducing them, having them be important for a scene, and fitting that all into a single season is worth the bother. I don't think it was. I'm sure you disagree.

It's a huge focus. Apparently for the light novels too. They've got a lot more volumes to spread the story over though. It's not really my main argument even. My issue is that they had a lot to say and they spent a lot of their limited time not saying it. Reading about the series from other people it definitely invites external research, which wouldn't have to be the case if they had spent more time on it in the first place.

I don't think it was all that big a focus in Horizon, but I'm not sure I'd call any usage of historical characters "laudable." There are tons of manga and anime based on the Warring States period or the Three Kingdoms, but that doesn't make Ikkitousen not retarded.

You can see some of the Light Novel pictures here. Something like this is pretty much porn. Tori has pretty mild character design compared to a lot of the female cast.

I think the classroom angle hurt it, personally. Some of the secondary cast outside the class probably deserved more face time than some of the classmates got. I really doubt a lot of those guys are ever going to be critical.

I'm not sure I ever called it bad, I believe I've said "meh" several times. It was worth finishing, which I can't say I've bothered to do with a number of other Ecchi focused shows. I'm not even against the idea, I liked the premise. But I think they could have done with a longer first season and spent more time spreading the exposition out rather than dense bursts combined with ecchi.
