Cleverbot
« on: September 01, 2011, 12:09:49 AM »
OK, so I admit that I pay very little attention to what goes on in the Interwebz, so I did not know what Cleverbot was until I stumbled across a CNN article today about a conversation Cleverbot had with itself.  After watching the video, I had to try talking to it myself.  I thought it was worth a laugh, so here's how the conversation went:

cleverbot learns from interacting with people. Every new line you write will be saved and used later by cleverbot. Unfortunately /b/ is aware of that and their little manipulation game is partially the reason why cleverbot seems so retarded at times.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

Yeah I know, but there is still an anime called Ghost Stories that is a horror anime just as "Video Description" says. Not that I think that audio track is and original, Japanese people aren't as dull and stupid as that...well usually. And I have not seen it...well watching it now :D

I've stopped in and had three "conversations" with Cleverbot.  Some of the exchanges have been quite entertaining.  I wish that there was a larger buffer for the exchanges; had a fairly lengthy session ~3:00 a.m. this morning and was disappointed to see it cut off at about the last 15 exchanges or so.  A few pretty funny ones I wanted to post here, but now lost.  Cleverbot claimed to be "a god," which evolved into a sequence on dreams.  I suggested that Cleverbot was just dreaming and that the conversation was not real, but a lucid dream.  It informed me that it was time for me to wake up, that my dream had become dangerous.  :o

I still rate it only about a 3 of 10 for clever, though.  Many of it's posts are not related to the previous response or question.  I type in the simple answer "Non-sequitor." each time that happens, and each time it asks me to explain what that means, but in a different way each time.  Fun little fantasy game pretending that I'm training the next HAL 9000.  8)
I win, once again, in my never-ending struggle against victory.

I gotta agree with you on that.  Even if you didn't know it was a program, you can figure it out almost immediately.  It's like talking to a schizophrenic with severe brain damage and ADHD.  Interesting little time waster.

And, that's different from Cleverbot ... how???

Even if you didn't know it was a program, you can figure it out almost immediately.  It's like talking to a schizophrenic with severe brain damage and ADHD.

Looking at some of the answers & responses I get from it, I do wonder how many people could tell the difference clearly & immediately.  Cleverbot is currently rated at ~41%-42% "clever" ... Each session I've had I rated it a 3.  But, I have some experience with Turing Tests.  I played with several of them over the years, especially circa 1997 - 2002.  So, my standards are (probably) a bit higher than the general 'Netizen.  With a score like that, there's got to be quite a number of people rating it a 5 or 6, at least.  Kind of scary-low standards for "cleverness."

Years ago I lived in a town where I (and many other night owls) would congregate at a local, 24-hour coffee/donut shop during all hours of the night.  Had some "interesting" conversations with some of the local freaks-of-the-night there.  One guy in particular could have been Cleverbot.  I'll never forget him; I'm certain he was a true schizophrenic, possibly with lobotomy-like surgery of some sort, bombed on caffeine & sugar.
I win, once again, in my never-ending struggle against victory.
