Graphics Designing or Web Designing?
« on: September 03, 2011, 11:57:09 AM »
1st official topic.
Pardon the ignorance   :-[

What would you recommend to someone who cannot draw well? I am in my last year of high school and I need to choose between graphics designing, web designing or animations? I don't have the talent for drawing or painting so maybe slash out the animations. So, what do you recommend?

By the way, which course would make me richer from the said courses? LOL.

Zankyuu~

PS. if something is wrong, please point it out and don't hesitate to tell me <insert laughing meme face here>  :D

Graphic or web design design. Unless your Graphic Design course has an illustration section you won't have to draw much. Half of my class couldn't draw for toffee ;)

If you want a chat PM me :)

i know it's a joke. but let's just say you're serious.
so... none of em. trust me, even pancakes can make you rich.

as for which course to choose, I'd say Web Designing.

in our bachelor of arts in graphics and media, we tackle all three. i sucked at drawings at first,
but i steadily improved, so i think if you're really dedicated you can choose any of those. it's
all in creativity really.

I could insert a lot of sarcastic and even more cynical comments and examples about the subject but I'll just make do with laughing at you conceitedly:
KEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEK EKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKE KEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEK EKEKEKEKEKE!

Because we can!

@JoonasTo - Bruuuuu. Is this suppose to be a verbal assault? Seriously, if this is once again a joke, let me laugh with you in an evil mode :>

@Kyrdua - Thanks. I am once again inspired and enlightened.

take graphics designing, web designing can be done even without the course itself, all you need is a book.

Edit: yes i am serious, if you're managing your own blog then thats the simplest web designing you've done.

I think they're just as good in supermarket as anyone else.  :P
As in school, yeah, they were good. Really good even. But Finland is oversaturated with graphic designers so there's zero work here.

No, I'm not. Thank god for that!

Andu has more info on UK side, so far, not so good.

Because we can!

And this is why i am happy with my choice of a hard(er) science.  ;D

Web design can really be done by most anyone who knows a smidgen of HTML and has Dreamweaver. The most important things your going to be doing actually are learning how to use key words and boost your goggling status for clients (and if the degree doesn't have a class for that they sorely need it). As for animation and Graphic design, that's out of my own field so i have little knowledge on those degree paths. Generally I've seen people couple Web and Graphic together to be successful.

JoonasTo brings up a very good point in that you should look around and ask people whether a certain degree actually has jobs out there. There is more to picking a degree than just "this might interest me" or "I think i could do this". Generally hard sciences do the best because there is always a demand for them (i believe last time i looked they had like a 95% chance of getting into your respective field).

The labor market works just like any other market in the sense that different jobs requiring certain skills are in varying supply. Jobs in the arts and social sciences are generally in lower supply (there are a ton of people with English and Philosophy degrees working at McDonalds). Of course it depends on where your trying to get a job etc. Many people with those kinds of degrees ether have to be the top of their field or combine it with some other skill/talent. Remember that when you choose a lower demand degree you have to go farther in that field or again take up something else along with it to make the cut (A.K.A getting a masters or doctorate instead of just going for 2-4 years or having multiple degrees that work well together). Also remember that certain degrees and job types (such as anything related to computer science) require you to stay up to date in your field as well and that staying stagnant will only make you obsolete (My mom used to be a software engineer for 20 some odd years and now she can't get squat for a job cause she stayed stagnant in her training).

I'm curious as to what drew you to Animation/Graphic Design/Web Design in the first place. Lure of money/interest/other?

are you kidding me? you can make and manage a blog with just wordpress! you /don't/ even need to do any
actual designing much less coding. in web designing you have to take a lot of stuff into consideration.

that's like saying you can work on magazine covers just because you know photoshop...

I think about graphic design or web design is that its getting easier for anyone to figure out how to do it. It will be harder to land a job right after college. I wouldn't recommend getting a degree in web designing or graphic arts.

Web design is pretty easy but won't make money.

^ That. Graphic arts should be fine. It has more varieties than what you think.

As for drawing, if you have passion for it - essentially that's the first requirement, then you should start drawing. I have no knowledge on how to properly do the steps but you can google and YouTube which I'd recommend. There is also computer drawing in PhotoShop which is very impressive.

I think you guys are underestimating web designing:

http://www.all-computer-schools.com/computer-careers/web-design/web-designer-salary

sure, that may be exaggerated. But i can certainly say having skills on web design can give you good money
while you study. Someone in my Web design class (all we do is design though, no php no nothing :-\) earns
herself $15 per page or something like that. forgot the details on how complex the coding she does is. but
to me that's decent money.

I wouldn't recommend anything but would like to say these were my options of career before I took engineering.

Well about the drawing part, it's not as difficult as it might look. I used to be very good at drawing (best in my class mind you) but I was never encouraged along this field, eventually I ignored drawing and now I really suck it. It's all in the practice. It will take some time, but you will eventually get it right.

In any case, these fields are no play and are gonna require your full dedication, keep that in mind.

like i said, all you need is a book to learn web designing, the rest is up to the program used and your artistic skills.

PS: web blogs has have built-in pre-made design that you could use and could alter, altering it would result in "redesigning".

thanks for all the people who shared their insights and views.
I was thinking about being a graphics designer and proceed to web designing. Isn't it something? <please insert hilarious smiley>  :D

If you marry the two you will definitely have more options when it comes to finding a job. Remember that in these fields not only does your particular style weigh heavily on whether you get contracts but your skill range needs to be wide enough to handle everything related to what your doing. If your going to be a graphic designer you need at bare minimum a cursory knowledge of web development and to really succeed, be a master at both. These fields are competitive so you have to be the best of the best.
