Good screen/disk cleaner? and a good microfiber cloth?
« on: September 04, 2011, 01:15:08 AM »
Just wondering if anyone had a good screen cleaner/DVD cleaner that they could recomend. I want something to wipe down the screens on my handhelds, and that i can use to give a good wipe down to older used disc games that i buy.

I bought something at Frys a while back, called Klear screen i think, but i loaned the spray to my father a while back and he lost it. So now i dont have anything. It worked pretty good. I think it didn't seem to wipe as well as I would have liked, but it did have something in it that repelled dust particles after it was aplied. I heard something called omnicleanz is pretty decent, but it seems like its a universal spray which doesn't sound too good to me. I want something specifically for fine things you cant scratch, like CD's and handheld screens. Anyone have any suggestions? I gotta put a screen protector on my DS and psp and would like to give them a good wipe with a spray before i do

follow up question.. anyone know of a GOOD really high quality microfiber cloth that is truly scratch free? I had an old one that i cnt remember where i bought it and its getting pretty used. A lot of the ones that claim theyre scratch and lint free, will actually put tiny scratches on CD's and stuff when you use them. Especially on PS1 disks

Good disk cleaner -- tooth past
good cloth for disks -- your thumb and some elbow grease
Good screen cloth -- jewler's cloth
good screen cleaner -- a little bit of water.

If your at all serious, you utterly and completely fail. A shirt? really?

@ the tooth paste thing.. no, im not talking about resurfacing stuff. THats crap. I just mean to wipe them down without damaging or altering them in any way. Right now I usually run them under water and use a TINY bit of soap thats lotion and abrassive free, or just some 90% alcohol.

never thought of a jewlers cloth.. but since you recomend tooth paste and other stuff im not sure about the rest of your recomendations. I'm asking about stuff like omnicleanz, iklean, ect. If any of those work really well.

If you have glasses, use the glasses cleaner.

I dunno if Kenshin is serious either.

I might as well just say Windex and a car chamois.

When cleaning a screen use special products adapted for that due to the electronics around many screens. You can manufacture these or use pure water, a decent one at a PC shop costs like 3 dollars though. Any kind of soft cloth will do, just consider if it would make marks in glass or not.

I thought they sell tons of these in computer shops.
And from what I've been using, it does the job just nice.

Why the hell would i not be serious? If you guys dont actually take care of your stuff, please dont bother posting. If you actually use a t shirt to clean vintage CD games, spray windex on a DS or psp or something then i dont really have anything to discuss with you. Please dont spam with your posts

thats what im talking about. Im wondering what product i should try. Seems theres a few different ones when i was searching around. The one i got that got lost was from Fry's but im not positive what it was called since i dont have the case anymore. And the only Fry's near me is about an hour drive drive away so i dont visit it often.  I keep coming up with OmniCleanz when im searching for stuff. Im curious if anyones used it before? Or if you or anyones found a brand that works good.

can you glance at the bottle and tell me what brand it is?

@tomoya-kun  I do have a decent cloth thats with my prescription shades, but i dont really wanna gunk it up with cleaning solution. Maybe i can get ahold of another one though. When i pick up regular microfiber cloth in variou stores it seems hit and miss if its any good or not.  Thanks to those who provided real suggestions.

Generic made in China product, and all I see here is KCL-035.
Traveller Cleaning Kit, comes with anti-static brush, magic cloth and bottle of what seems to be water? for spraying.
Nothing on the bottle besides instructions.

A jeweler's cloth is super soft and completely lint free. I've never needed anything other than water to clean my screens.

As for cleaning disk (not resurfacing) jeweler's cloth. For cleaner, use slow breathing the disk. This may sound like I'm bullshiting you, but it heats any oils on the surface and moistens it (for those many things that are water solvent). A jeweler's cloth (or a standard microfiber lense cloth like I use) will pick up whatever is on the disk. This has never failed me. If that doesn't work, I would put a small amount soapy water on a jeweler's cloth. Apply increasing amounts of pressure as needed. If that doesn't work -- tooth paste, because its in the disk's surface to some extent.

As for professional cleaners, I've never needed them. honestly, I've never even needed to use the soap. My slow controlled breath works fine, and a jeweler's cloth is a must have.

A soft shirt if you are sure that it is of good quality.  Also an airspray cleaner.

How the hell is my answer a bullshit answer? While unconventional, it's an option beyond what was already said. Unless parroting things and going +1 is useful to you.

Jewelers cloth
Microfiber cloth
Cloth usually provided with glasses (the more velvetty the better)
The cloths usually provided with screen protectors (technically the shitty versions of the glasses cloths)
A good shirt with high thread count. (Subjective, but you can't go wrong with most dress shirts)
Chamois - People use these things to wipe down cars without scratching. Make sense?

Cleaners:
Most glasses cleaning solutions are fine.

Windex - Though you might want to consider diluting this one. (See Sosseres comment regarding making your own etc)
Water - (See above comments about using breath)
Glasses cleaner - On occasion you might want to consider diluting this one
Dish soap - (Again, consider diluting this one)

As far as I know, most of these "professional electronic screen cleaners" are just dilutions of existing products. Monster sold one and as far as I could tell, it resembled glasses cleaner with maybe some anti-reflective/anti glare stuff added in. Most will merely vary based on how strong the solution is, and whether it focuses on cleaning or anti-reflective/glare/smudging properties.

Maybe next time, instead of calling people's answers bullshit, you can spend some time considering how it might work or not work.

I think the topic creator is looking for a professional product, and instead of needing informing, needs enlightening as to the overrated value of such products.

Also, I would stay away from Windex and all its ilk. Classes cleaner should be OK. I heard there is a solvent in it that can damage certain screen coatings (like the anti-reflective glare coating on many monitors).

True enough nstgc. But this is what I got from the post:

Quote
I want something to wipe down the screens on my handhelds, and that i can use to give a good wipe down to older used disc games that i buy.

On a monitor, or a plasma/LCD tv, I would never use windex. But most handhelds, phones and discs are perfectly fine IMO. Not that it should/would ever be dirty enough to need something like that to clean it off. (Unless you sneeze boogers all over your handhelds, but that's a different issue.

Glasses cleaner and "professional" cleaner stuff for monitors is fine. But why you would need to have a pristine shine on a Disc, phone or other handheld is beyond me.

Thanks for the reply though nstgc. I understand what you were looking into regarding concerns.

I don't doubt that Windex is fine for handhelds, but I'm afraid if people start thinking "Windex + dirty screen = shiny screen" that will carry over to monitors. Since neither disks nor handhelds should, as you said, ever get that dirty, its best to just say "no" for all screens in case someone wants to generalize it to include monitors.

True. Never underestimate the ability for people to do things that don't make sense.

Well, it does make sense to clean your screen with Windex (which is part of the problem)...and it certainly will make it shiny. Some people just don't that their screens aren't suppose to be quite that shiny.

Oh, also saliva. I used to lick my finger then use that to clean my old Samsung, until I noticed the shiny spots it caused. I'm not sure if that's what caused it, but I can't think of anything else.

I've used Windex for years and I have had no ill effect.  I even have friends that have as well.  Some people just have ocd and over do it.  Maybe if I took a microscope to my screens I may notice something, but I don't care.  For a cd I use rubbing alcohol and my glasses cloth.

Also who sprays Windex directly onto a device?  Spray it on the cloth, not the device.

Some screens don't have the same coating as others. My brother's Asus laptop, for instances does not. Don't go telling people to use Windex on their monitors (or screens) because you don't know what kind of coating they may or may not have. Also, Why do you feel its necessary to use Windex? In my 18 years with computer screens I have never known them to get dirty enough that soap and water wasn't enough. In fact I have no memory of using more than water and spit (spit due to convenience) and I know for certain I've never used a cleaning product.
