Illegal? Or just fun?
« on: September 05, 2011, 04:12:17 PM »
So a few days ago there was a bunch of young people in REALLY nice cars that went racing around a highway loop in the middle of the day. Which is dumb, later at night and no one would have noticed, but anyways, they were going for like an hour before they got caught. They caused no accidents and no one could keep up with them. They all got like $200 tickets and they're cars impounded and licences revoked, but that's it.

So my question is this, should street racing have a harder fine, or does it in your place of residence, and if so what should it be?

Full Story

I'm gunna leave you anyway.

i think there licenses should be suspended for at least six months . i mean those guys racing around on the freeways are worse than drunk drivers but they just git a slap on the wrist most the time.
plus most of them are some kid with a rich daddy and git away with too much in the first place.
NO! STOP! DON'T!

200$ Isn't a lot, you'd probably get your car taken, your license revoked permanentlyand a 500 euro or so fine down here. Anyway, I consider it a stupid practice that ought be dealt with. It doesn't really matter if no one fucks up, but it doesn't take a lot for that to happen and if it does, shit will hit the fan.

There are plenty of unused mountain/valley/forest/dead village roads, track days at a ring, or something else to fuck around in. The highway is a place you need to get the fuck off.

Virginia use to have a $1000 ticket for speeding over 10 mph over the speed limit. I believe they had revoked that law since then though.

As for Street Racing, it needs to be a little more steep. Like if a cop clearly sees a "starter" and two cars are racing down a strip of highway, that needs to be jail time + fine + revoked license for at least a year. Just because you want to have "FUN" on the highway, you endanger other people's lives (let alone your own lives?)?

Speeding tickets: $100-$200 + points
Street Racing: Jail time + $1000 fine + Revoked License

Speeding is understandable (to a degree), but street racing is just dumb.

Because we can!

There are places where people can race. Wel we have places they can rent (rather cheep in fact) and race as fast and long as they wish. Its even safer that way - one have a track and a staff on alart if something does go wrong.
Street racing should have harder fine. It is unsafe for people around racers and it is unsafe for racers themselves. We used to have this every Friday/weekend racing not so far from my home. Just annoying.

california laws are

A first conviction on a street racing violation (23109 VC) means:

Minimum county jail sentence of 24 hours and maximum of 90 days.
Vehicle probably impounded for at least 30 days.
Owner responsible for vehicle's towing and storage charges ($1,000 or more).
If owner fails to pay, vehicle could be sold at a lien sale.
Anyone who aids or abets a street race also faces a maximum 90-day jail sentence.

Plus they will go over your car with a fine tooth comb looking for any modifications and if they find say an engine with a vin scratched off they will crush the whole car.

I have been to tracks many of times and I say its much better then racing down the street with people on it any day. I would never attempt to go 175mph on freeway with other cars.

virginia hits you with reckless at either 20 or 25mph over the speed limit and revokes your license. So realistically in a state like VA it dont make a difference. Really they should hit the street racers with the multiple tickets for the acts they are doing. Things like reckless driving and excessive speeding  possibly reckless endangerment in there as well and you quickly get over 1k in fines.

I know here in jersey 25mph over the limit and they can take your license in a lot of states they take your license on double the limit (50 in a 25 = license lost 80 in a 40 etc)
and our speeding tickets are tiered
1-5 mph over the speed limit = 95$
6-10 mph over = 105$
11-15 mph over = 195$

i dont remember the fines after that off hand but they also tend to throw reckless driving in there with 20+ mph over at the discretion of the officer who pulls you over.

Until you crash, burn, and die... and then you feel even worse when you live and you've killed someone else because it was "fun."

they could pretty much rent a private road... as if an overnight rent would cost them more than getting caught.

it's in the thrill of escaping when the police catches wind of what they're doing, apparently.
also, bragging rights if they successfully do.

I have no sympathy for street racers.  None.  Everything has its time and place.  Cars are not toys, and there are way too many dumbasses on the road endangering people's lives already without more dumbasses making it worse.
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.

I don't think people should be allowed to do it, it endangers lives and is assinine.

On the other hand, when I do it it's perfectly safe and a LOT of fun.

It is dumb and it should be followed with a heavier fine than that.

While speeding is nearly a necessity of life at times. (When you drive for hours and hours, reducing the time is a life saver)

But there's been so much stupid shit that I've witnessed while driving (of sane, SOBER people too) that I'm usually stunned while watching these crazy antics.

My area doesn't have huge issues with street racing. But there are plenty of people willing to speed together to get through areas faster.

If you're going to speed, fine. But make sure you keep up with increased scanning for hazards because you're going to have less time to react. I know of too many idiot drivers where we can't help but go, "How the fuck does that not register on your common sense scale?"
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.
