In my country we call it "alpha" symbol. And before there was email we've basically never used it for anything. Now we also call it as "at" symbol.

It's "at." Sometimes when sending emails on secret-side internet you can't email an email address (it's weird) so you have to do something like:


first.last(at)domain.secretdomain .mil

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

In russia it`s called "sobaka", that`s russsian for a dog. and it has always been a complete mystery to me why it`s called that :P

In my culture @ is that thing you find in emails and something it's used to represent internet as a whole. And that's about it.
