Alot of ISP's are limiting bandwidth. So I thought I would post this and help anyone with charter out.

Charter Residential recently put a 500GB a month limit cap in place for their top tier service. When they did this I was going above that to a point where they wanted to cancel my service and let me reapply in 3 months.

Charter Business class on the other hand has no limits. So since I used my connection for work anyways I transferred. Not bandwidth caps at all. It is a bit more expensive(I pay about 200 a month for the 50mbps down and 5mbps up). But oh well.

200 hundred Norway dollars (sorry Ace, I can't remember what Norway's currency is... Krons or something?)? Or 200 USD? I mean holy shit... are there really no other ISPs where you live that you'll have to pay $200 for only 50mbps down and only 5 mbps up? I know for a fact that Verizon Fios's 50 down/50 up plan is like $80.

I have Comcast though, about 20 down/4 up. I think they have a soft limit 250 GBs and then they start sending me letters to stop doing that. I havn't hit anywhere near that limit and I download A LOT and surf the internet A LOT and watch movies on Netflic A LOT, etc. How you hit 500 GBs limit is beyond me. You literally have to download 16 GBs on average a day to hit 500 GBs a month. What the hell are you doing with your internet connection?

I'm using a Verizon FIOS line, 15/5. I don't download a terrible large amount, maybe average 20-25 GB a week. But, I upload ~1.5 TB month.

Haven't had a single peep out of Verizon for 16 months now. Our package covers landline, two cell phones (unlimited within U.S.), basic cable, and the 15/5 internets for $120 U$D/month.

Mine sucks. I have Rogers—which is probably stupid—and it obv has a bandwidth limit. I get max 20Mbs Down, 1Mb up. 140 GBs a month, and it costs about 40 bucks a month. I don't pay for it, and I've been telling my mom to switch, but she's a little lazy sometimes. Canada and the US are prolly the worst for this stuff.

Yes, yes it is. Price-wise relatively, though, that's not terrible (which isn't exactly a good thing). In my mind, though, Rogers connections suck.

25/2.5 250GB at Shaw (Extreme) costs $49/mo in a bundle, or $59/mo standalone, IIRC. If you're a full-time post-secondary student, though, you can get it for $25/mo, which is what I'm getting (also 500GB instead of 250 for students).

Apparently, Shaw will give you a call if you consistently go over the cap, but won't charge for overage.

Ive got a 250GB/month DL limit but unlimited UL. Not a big deal since I dont use much DL at all anyway. Maybe 5-10 a month in torrents and then games/internet. If they capped my upload limit, I would be pissed.
Actually, I let my neighbor steal my wifi also, so he uses some, but not much.
Speeds are not that great tho- 15/5.

No, no need.
Hes also a friend and lets the dog out when I am out of town. Thats all the reimbursement I want. I rarely make full use of the connection these days anyway, so its wasted otherwise.
I know I said "steal" but I should have just said that I let him have unrestricted access. He doesn't use very much so its fine. Besides, hes only getting my wifi signal which only puts out maybe 1/3 of what I get with a plug. While it theoretically lowers my speeds, the max he can get is nothing close to mine. I think the wifi connection only gives 7/0.9 or something.

I work from home and upload stuff. I also download a huge chunk of stuff.

My usage this month at this second is:
Incoming (MBytes)95238
Outgoing (MBytes)232349

I have been moving which is why my incoming is so low. I also tether to my phone alot.

Last months usage was:
August 2011 (Incoming: 636437 MB / Outgoing: 229762 MB)

If you want to watch or know what you use dd-wrt is AMAZING!
You can see and save month to month and even watch it in realtime as well as daily stats

And yes I know my IP is there but I don't really care no one is getting into my router/network

Also it is $200 USD. Business class service is more expensive. For $30 more on the residential side I got 35mbps down all of the premium movie channels and channel packages and a HD DVR and 2 phone lines. But I never watched TV So I dropped the TV and kept internet and phone lines and my bill is actually a bit lower.

They said I was in the top 1% of bandwidth usage in my town and I was impacting other users on the residential side

Last month I downloaded 692GB and uploaded 25288GB, this month (since the 1st) - 141GB down, 4415GB up.

80LTL/month (= 31.64USD = 23.17EUR)

I know this may sound like a dumbass question, but why the hell doesn't or can't my ISP monitor my Bandwidth use? I mean, it's not that they "can't", but their numbers are waaaaaay the hell off and in the minus range too.

I get a service use statement on my e-bill and according to them, I'm only using 2-13 GB a month, but my BitTorrent and AnalogX Netstat Live are both telling me I'm using between 600GB-1.4TB, which I know is the real amount. I know that Comcast monitors these things pretty well, because I have two friends that got hate mail and phone calls about "Excessive usage" and one of them even had his service suspended for 4 months. What's weird about that is they have the same "soft cap" of 250GB a month as I do, but they don't use the internet nearly half as much as I do. It's also been like this for at least 2-3 years or that's when I first started noticing it. So anybody have any ideas? Before anyone asks, I'm not using a VPN or Spoofing or using any kind of warez, AFAIK that would do such a thing.

Gah, my account would have been suspended already...getting close to 1TB per month. Only have 20Mb/s down and I wasn't even trying as you can see the on and off days. 250 gigs is way too low.

BUT my provider: Insight, has just been bought by Time Warner ($3 Billion). So I'm dreading the worst. Anyone using Road Runner? How are the caps if any and service? We already have DOCSIS, but costs twice as much for 50Mb/s down ($100). How are the prices?

Upgrade to business class. Call your current ISP and other ISP's around your area and see if they'll give you a Business Class ISP connection. Business class has no bandwidth restriction (confirm it with them), more speed, all ports open (very good for torrenting and gaming), dynamic or static IP (you can choose one or the other, confirm it with them) and some of them offer 24/7 Business Customer Services - really good experience with Comcast. They fucking leave their business cards with me at my house whenever I have a problem and say "You got a problem, contact me at this number or my boss. We'll be here for you the same day or next day". They work on Sundays too for Business only. The downside is the extra dollars your gonna spend (roughly 10 dollars more for Comcast) and a possible contract.

I did not think Time Warner had caps, but then I'm also in an area with 2 isp's. When I was on road runner there was no caps but that was a year ago. The customer service is good for an isp, but the uptime and the latency suck. I'm now using WOW(Wide Open West). No caps, good latency, and high uptime. price is the same tho

Thanks. I feel relieved.

Though I feel we'll all have to upgrade to some business class in the future, that is for those in the US. Really bothers me that we are so behind compared to other parts of the world. Yet, costs much more.

That is why I went to business class. And I work from home so I can kinda justify it and it will help with the tax write offs

The USA is HORRIBLE on ISP speed, cost, and availability. But this is what we get when we pretty much allow companies to bribe lawmakers in the form of lobbyists.

In TN where I live the state GAVE $100 million to Bellsouth to expand broadband into rural areas. What happened? They did nothing At&t bought Bellsouth and got a free $100 million. And no one even got a slap on the wrist.

Or a person over seeing if comcast and NBC are allowed to merge gets a job with comcast right after voting to allow the merger.

Yeah the U.S. is seriously dropping the ball when it comes to broadband.
When I was in Japan 10 years ago we got what the average American citizen gets today (which is around 10meg). And Europe practically mandates that their people get good service. This chart pretty much says it all.

That being said, I recently upgraded my service to 60/6 and it's pretty descent. Cost me $100/month. Got a 500gb monthly cap but I've been breaking it a lot and they haven't cut me off yet. Keeping my fingers crossed though.

Looked into the business service. It's almost double the money for the same speed. No caps though.
