And now they all regret it. Which answers a not asked question as to who they blame.

I don't even know why I waste my time anymore.

I remember countless times when someone was going to tell him the "rules" and the like, but every time someone else stopped them from saying anything. So it's obvious that the class knew that he didn't know anything. He was purposefully kept in the dark.

This most recent episode was an improvement over the last couple. I still have mixed opinions on this show, but hopefully it's a sign that it'll improve even more in the coming episodes.

Probably because she was seated in the old desk.

It's because she lives in a place filled with creepy dolls.  ;D
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

Mei got ignored after her cousin died. I'm pretty sure the two events are related.

Anyway, the countermeasure works by ignoring Mei's existence. If someone were to admit she's real, the curse would be triggered and (s)he or his/her relative would die. Therefor, the whole class must be fully aware of this unwritten, yet very important rule. Since the person responsible for it couldn't tell Kou about the rule before he was released from hospital, and no one else did in her stead, when he actually started attending school, all they could do is hope he'd get the message when he'd notice everyone ignoring Mei.

The problem is that the exact opposite happened: he started talking to her, thereby acknowledging her existence (even if she tried to prevent him from getting too close to her). At this point, the class could no longer tell him about the rule, because doing so would trigger the curse (because they'd have to admit Mei was real to explain the rule). So, they entered a vicious circle: not telling him would mean that they at least would keep denying Mei's existence, though the curse might have already been triggered due to Kou's interaction with Mei. Telling him would mean that they all would admit Mei exists, which would also trigger the curse. So, they're damned if they don't and damned if they do. And since three people have already died due to Kou asking too many questions, he now too gets the silent treatment.

The question now is, since Kou is now fully aware of Mei's existence and they seem to get along quite well, does this mean that the curse will keep happening, even if the students themselves never speak to him (or her) again?

Following that logic, he and Mei acknowledge their each existence, so nothing is fixed this way I suppose.

We can only WAIT and SEE what happens.

There are three kinds of people.
Those who make things happen.
Thow who watch things happen.
and Those who wonder what happened.

Thank god/dess that the quite, creepy factor is back, front and center.

^ THIS. Question.  I really thought it was about to be answered as the cliffhanger for the episode .... then they cut it in the middle of the conversation.  Also was hoping for an explanation of her left eye, but that seems it might be upcoming in the next Ep.

This most recent episode was an improvement over the last couple. I still have mixed opinions on this show, but hopefully it's a sign that it'll improve even more in the coming episodes.

Agreed.  There still seems to be some hope.  In retrospect, Ep. 04 was the only one that really upset me; 01 - 03 were good-to-about-expected.

With Mei's revelation about the class size (which might or might not be true), looks like a bit of a Sixth Sense setup for the series.  Which would be awesome if they can pull it off.  I want this anime to fool me right to the end, but it's a fairly high bar to meet, especially if it goes to second season.  The clues they seed throughout will have to be amazing to miss them right in front of your face for a whole year.

And, there will be an rAgE, oh a RaGe, if they go with a bucketfull of retarded duex ex machina reveals at the conclusion.  That's one thing that was unforgivable with Blood C, for example.

Notice @~11:13 the classroom shot.  There are 30 desks, including Mei's.  And 25 students, excluding Mei & Kouichi.  So, two dead, another missing, and perhaps a 31st.  Or, was it supposed to be 29 from the beginning, but Mei was the odd 30th (and thus her "assigned" desk)?

But, Kouichi transferring in ... made him the 30th.  Wonder if he's filling a desk emptied by a previous death, when "it" "might have started back in May."  How was there an empty desk waiting for him?  If the old desk is so spooky, why is Mei sitting at it?  Until Kouichi arrived, it should have sat empty, unless the "Class Rules" required Mei to move to it once she became "invisible."

Thing is, here at the end of Ep. 05, there is no clear evidence of anything supernatural.  Nobody actually sees spirits/ghosts, all the accidents are just that.  Is this all going to be a collective, group mind self-fuck?  A mob group-psych?  Or, is there really going to be a true supernatural reveal?

Given the classic horror mentioned previously, such as Steven King and Damien, it really could go either way.

Sadly, all this could have been avoided if someone had just pulled an extra desk out of another classroom 26 years ago ...  :-\

Ep 5:

"Someone in the class about to tell the new guy some stuff about the class's secrets? No problem! just give them a heart attack the moment they're about to spill the beans!"

(click to show/hide)

^ actualy, if we go realisticaly, heart attacks are sudden, and if you have related heart problem, you most likely live in constant fear of a heart attack which can be caused by simple stress :P
there was no stress. but yes, heart attacks are sudden. but they usually happen when the person is happy or in despair (or at least in fiction), not when they're about to tell someone something.

@datora: though never actually seen being used, Misaki's left eye is supernatural enough for me.
on the desk thing, spirits/ghost are known to associate themselves with objects or places. like say, ghost ships and haunted houses, cursed swords, etc.

also, the extra student thing.

Actually, there may have been. Because he was probably stressing out about whether or not he should tell Sakakibara, which when he did, he got a heart attack... But even then, he would have been relieving stress.

I agree with Kyrdua on the heart attack. It could have been expected, but it sure didn't surprise me. Also a heart attack this violent is very unlikely for a young boy, even if he did have heart problems. It looked more like his heart was crushed instead from his facial expression, than a simple heart failure. Someone who designed this death should have read up on what people feel during "soft","moderate" and "heavy" heart attacks. I did laugh though, cuz his face was funny.

1-If they actually did what he imagined in class, it would have triggered a romance flag (teh flag was probably still triggered.) +4
2-The ending of the episode was out of the blue, made no sense at all. -6
3-We learned a whole lot of stuff in this episode though, so all is not lost yet. +5

Total hilarity points : +3

Ep 06 - I was really happy to get a lot of information & explanations.  Will probably marathon the entire series up until now during the weekend to try and piece a bunch of stuff together.  The librarian's recollections would have satisfied me this Ep.  But, there was also quite a bit more.  Very interesting reveal about 1 and 1/2 years ago.  You'd think there would have been more evidence of it before now ... indication of shifting memories while "it" is in effect?

A couple of directions I've been thinking seem to be a least partially on-track, but still some odd things that don't just fit.  Yet.  Exactly the sort of thing I like about a good story.  Noticed that Kouichi did, indeed, get Mei's desk after she was moved to her current location.

Anyone think Mochizuki's painting is a reveal?  "He hasn't changed," so it's typical of what sort of art his mind produces.  Which also might apply to Mei's mother?  Wondering what the need to deface Mei's art would be, and who would feel a need.

The cliffhanger for this Ep. was about 99% unexpected, but the few seconds preceding it clued me something pretty dramatic was about to hit.  Self-fulfilling prophecy?  [ NOTE: 28 students present @21:54, 21:58, 22:45. ]

But, both Kouichi and Reiko seem to have broken the Rules (scene @20:50) ... the invisible students are supposed to follow the Rules just as much as everyone else.

Switched over to [Underwater] and now have karaoke to include.  The lyrics are part of the story.  Excellent.  Go ALI Project!  8)  Anyone notice in the OP how the hand twitches just a bit as the coffin segment ends?  Nice touch.

Had a thought before on the ED & was reminded tonight: I wonder if the order of the cast appearance will turn out to be significant?

I felt the romance flag was tripped in Ep. 02, no later than Ep. 03.  It's worrisome that it's progressing.  Storyline would not seem to indicate a happy ending.

In other news, I predict diminishing chances of a bikini/beach fanservice episode.  :'(

Your assumption only works if what the twin tail girl said in this episode is wrong, "He has warm hands."
When I saw that painting I had to think of Evard Munch's The Scream.

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

^If all it would take to check if someone is dead was to touch their hands, they wouldn't have that many problems recognizing dead person.

Btw. the bag the teacher brought looked full so it should have plenty of other nice things than just a simple knife. I'm counting on a nice massacre.
