I think we can call this now. Misaki Mei might be lying about what her eye sees and the other Misaki actually being her sister, but assuming she isn't then Head of Countermeasures, Akazawa Izumi is the extra student. She and Sakakibara Kouichi have met before, in Yomiyawa. The phenomenon is obscuring this by altering memories. That strongly suggests one of them is dead. It's not Kouichi. Therefore, it's Izumi.

I think this is what happened:

* Kouichi was in Yomiyawa around 2 years ago.
* Kouichi and Izumi met during that time.
* Izumi's brother was in Class 3 that year.
* Izumi dies due to the phenomenon.
* Izumi comes back in April as the extra.

I'm not sure what happened to Izumi's brother though. How did he make Izumi cry? Did he just die as well? That seems a bit too simple.

but she's been keeping quiet?  Or, maybe her vision tells her who is contaminated with death .. so she sees it on several people without necessarily knowing which one is the Extra.  Like Cassandra, she just can know who is doomed beforehand without being able to do anything about it.

Why would the glass eye that her "mother" gave her have such a power?  Twin daughters of a twin sister, what weird connections there?

I think we can call this now. Izumi remembered Kouichi in a dream.  Her reaction in Ep. 01 when she touched his hand now comes full circle; there has been a "ghost" of a memory playing with her.  But, if she were dead, would she really dream?  I'm thinking her memories are definitely being fucked with, but not because she's the Extra.  Interesting reveal that dreams might see Truth and be able to bypass at least some of the altered memories.

This may also now be corroborating evidence that Kouichi did live in Yomiyama two years ago, as his father commented 'accidentally' in a previous episode.  Izumi could not have been dead when she met Kouichi.  Hmmm.  Although, her meeting him (before or after her death, if that happened) could be a reason for her ghost to return as the Extra; but why would she have become part of Class 3 before Kouichi's transfer?  Would be mind-bending creepy if she was dead when she met Kouichi in that dream sequence and Kouichi was able to see & interact with her then.

On 'another' note, though: if Izumi's brother was previously a casualty of the Class 3 phenomena ... it really sucks that information was not brought up before now.  It seems clear that is a very real possibility ... but, are memories so completely screwed with that people don't remember their own missing siblings from previous cycles?  Only two years ago?  NOBODY in the story remembers that ..?

Makes me be thinking that Izumi's brother may be the Extra in this years' Class 3.  Just need to ID him.  Izumi didn't die before, her brother did, and Teshigawara is Izumi's brother, now the Extra?  (Or Mochizuki).  But, Izumi does seem to have it in for Teshigawara ... an old, unresolved sibling issue affecting them unconsciously?

And, Teshigawara seems to have an unhealthy obsession with who the Extra is, perhaps even causing more death ... maybe he is already beginning to suspect he might be the Extra and is trying desperately not to realize it?

Izumi made some irrational/incorrect statements in her little speech @~10:30, though.

Koichi met Mei in the hospital before anyone knew they were classmates, and Teshigawara bears at least as much "responsibility" (by Izumi's logic) by his behavior later, but didn't get called out.

Last class trip/visit there were 19 students plus one extra ... the group photo this time demonstrates 18 students, plus #19 taking the photo, plus two teachers ... one who is "supposed" to be immune to the curse.

how can she be so sure that she is not in danger?  Very odd comment @~12:50.  Or, maybe she doesn't care about herself at this point and just meant others are more worth worrying about than herself.

Mostly, what I hope to see is them trying to resolve the Phenomena permanently, not just trying to stop it for this cycle only.  My previous comments about Izumi seeming to be unusually dedicated to her position as Head of Countermeasures ... I think she has the pieces to put it together and the will power to try and do whatever it takes to try and stop it permanently.

I still like the idea that Kouichi's mom is the Extra this time.  Perhaps even as Izumi.  Maybe Izumi never died because she was never alive ... she's "just" an Extra for someone else who was once alive.  There is no assurance, either, that there is always only one Extra; what if there were two?  Sometimes?

The question asked was "Could you kill your own classmate?"  But, I think the more important question is "Could you kill yourself?"

Izumi doesn't have to be in Class 3 two years ago to be the extra now. If her brother was enrolled in Class 3 when she died, there's your connection.

For the sake of a neat and symmetrical narrative I'd also like to see the phenomenon permanently ended, though the people who plan sequels might not see things that way.

It did irritate me how Kouichi so quickly accepted Mei's claims about her glass eye literally seeing things. That would've been so easy to test, too: "Mei, would you cover your right eye again. Now, how many fingers am I holding up?"

If she's lying, that puts a completely different spin on things. I'm not expecting that outcome though, given how the rest of her story holds together.

I assumed Kouichi and Izumi would only need to forget their past in Yomiyawa if one of them had died. It could also be a side-effect of Kouichi having to forget everything about his time there for some other reason - could be anything that would give away the identity of the dead. Maybe something from Izumi.

We know one other thing about Class 3 of two years ago: The non-existent student's resolve failed partway through the year. They forced contact with the others, and seven died as a result of the charm being broken.

It's also possible that the charm breaker ended up one of the victims, so they could be in the current Class 3 as the extra.

I'd guess the culprit was an impulsive blockhead with a penchant for screwing things up. Now, wouldn't Teshigawara Naoya fit perfectly in that role?

If Izumi's brother also died as a result of this, her hatred of Naoya would fit right in too.

Yeah, actually this makes better sense. Especially as it now looks like he's killed someone directly. What a muppet...

I don't see a problem with Mei at all, Kouichi is obviously interested in her romantically, it's not like he believed her about the eye but instead he listens to her, if she proves it then he has no reason not to believe it. Also Mei said herself that she tries not to remove the patch at school so even if by chance she did remove it once it doesn't mean she knew about what she saw.

Kouichi and Mei stated an interesting fact, the phenomena started much sooner than it's believed, this means that whatever started the phenomena it only picked up the pace when Kouichi came to this class.

It's quite possible it was Mei who started the phenomena by writing "Who is Dead?" in an attempt to help the class.
If i'm correct then blaming her for this is justified, but blaming it on her just because she talked to Kouichi is not justified, he talked to her, he was not informed of anything, he didn't know the rules.

There is only one reason why someone wouldn't want the rules to be told to Kouichi. The dead person instinctively wanted to act. All we know is that the dead person and the group consisting of the arts club boy, dumbass, the umbrella girl, the heart attack boy, the drowning boy and the other girl from the beach, decided not to tell him when Izumi was not present. One of them is the dead person and only 3 remain.

Izumi is not the dead person, why ? because while they are away from town, it's possible that the curse is weaker, which explains why Izumi whose body remember the hand of Kouichi but she didn't know why, now remembers the event they met. Mei can't be the dead person because if she was, and was ignored, she would probably vanish like the dead person killed in the mountains. Also even though the dead person doesn't realize it's dead, a dead person shouldn't have been able to recall memories. Because it doesn't have any.

Years ago the curse was stopped midyear probably due to 2 reasons, the dead person left the town with the class, moving away from it's "source of power" and weakening. Said person would be less stable (see Dumbass) and prone to conflict and violence (again see Dumbass), second reason is the dead person was killed, likely due to an accident, but still in a fistfight.

I don't think killing the dead person solves anything, it would be just temporary, like all curses, this would simply reset next year and pass on. The only way I see them defeating the curse would be confronting the dead person and learning why it acts, and removing the reason it acts.

I would like this curse to be resolved in this series, I don't think my stomach can sustain damage from laughing at the hilarious deaths anymore. Or the level of stupid from one character.

For one, Mei knows who the dead one is and if Teshigawa hadn't barged in so suddenly, she would've told Kouichi.

Two, Mei originally didn't sit at the window seat, but actually at the desk where Mochizuki is currently sitting at. She also said that it took a while before they actively started ignoring her; it wasn't till May 1, almost a week after her sister died that this happened, and right before Kouichi transferred in. If we assume that the curse was already underway when this all happened, Mei scribblings couldn't have been the cause for the phenomenon, neither would Kouichi transferring in, because, again, the phenomenon had already started by the time he came in.

I've been wanting to suspect Mochizuki, but I keep feeling that his fascination with such a disturbing art style is a red herring to deliberately mislead.  Sort of like Mei would be too obvious, given her eye and the very disturbing environment in which she lives.

I'd observed previously the sequence of characters who fade into view during the ED, and wondered if that might be significant.  Especially that Mei is visible first and then fades from view.  Seems that the

Vice-President, Kazumi, is now gone (jumped or fell from the balcony?), the second after the former President, Sakuragi, has had her little umbrella incident.

We now going to watch the rest fall like dominoes in that order?  Teshigawara and Mochizuki next, etc., with an unresolved Extra?  Or a surprise Extra at the end?  I'm gonna about cry if Izumi gets killed off; I'm a sucker for tsundere.

of Kazumi's arm in the rain at the end ... just didn't seem like blood stains; the heavy rain like that would have been washing blood off visibly fast and those marks looked more like bruises or tattoos.  Was that the "color of death" on his arm?  Similar to the distorted image of Yomiyama Misaki in the original Class 3 picture?

I wasn't suggesting that Izumi was in Class 3 two years ago.  I was suggesting that her older brother was in Class 3, and died a stupid death ... thus why she was upset in the dream sequence.  Her brother then might be the Extra in this class (Teshigawara?).  It would also explain why Izumi seems to take it so personally and seriously as the Head of Countermeasures ... if her brother was claimed by the Curse two years ago, she may be unusually motivated to try & solve the Phenomena.

If her brother does turn out to be the Extra in this Class, that would be really interesting.  Did he show up in this class because of his sister?  Would that be part of the connection with the dead showing up in Class 3 ... some sort of family connection between them and a living relative in any given Class 3?  Kind'a back to wondering if Kouichi's mom might be the Extra in this cycle.

Or, along that line of thinking ... what if Mei's sister had a real, unrelated accident in April?  A "normal" death?  And she now comes to Class 3 as the Extra, the Phenomena in fact beginning in May with Kouichi's transfer.  Can you imagine what the hell Class 3 (Izumi) was thinking when they made Mei the Invisible student?  Within a week or two of her sister's death?  Even if everyone thought they were only cousins, in a small town like that it would have been obvious they were close.

Still it was entertaining, but the absurdness of everybody's reactions and pseudo-horror makes me lose any unsettling feeling I had at the start of the series and seriously challenges my suspension of disbelief. Final episode next week better be very good to make up for this

Mochizuki would make a perfect dead person since he hasn't actually done anything, seems to get away unscathed and is the only one acting calm throughout the series.

Some explanation about seeming calm regarding the fire:
Teshigawara was given the task of informing the students about the fire, he was able to only warn a couple of students before running into the psycho woman, so that leaves the rest of the students in the dark about the fire, as for the students that already knew about the fire before Teshigawara was given the task they had let's say more pressing matters at hand (Some are looking for Kazami, one just heard Takako scream). When Takako let the cat out of the bag, the students that didn't know about the fire went "Return the dead to death" mode, but the ones that knew about the fire (only two) were already downstairs getting ready to evacuate, except they didn't feel like there was a fire since they're not seeing any flames, and we saw what happened when they went to confirm the existence of the fire. The explosion has let all the students know something is WRONG, so next episode we'll see more students evacuating/panicking is my guess.

Anyway Misaki's surprised look at the last scene was priceless, but how quickly it went back to normal somehow disturbed me.

No credibility remains after the opening moments when Mei did not state who the Extra is.

Of course, killing a full-grown human being with a single blow from a mop is s trivial thing to do ... but then, I nitpick in a barrel full of nitpicks.

The title for the next episode is the only one that doesn't seem to fit whatever poem the first 11 seem to compose.

I doubt this story can still be redeemed at this point; doesn't seem much more than a bucketfull of bloodbath and slasher nonsense.  Im'a just shut up now and watch it in gruesome fascination like any other train wreck.
