I would argue that DOA as a series is a lot like Mario or Dragon Quest.  It keeps what works and refines itself each sequel with new content.

That being said, I went out and got a 3DS just so I could play DOA: Dimensions.  And I am very dissapointed by this game.  The content is fantastic, its basically every DOA game packed into 1.  However, various new tweaks were made to the characters, and certain characters came out completely unbalanced.  The standard overpowered Ninjas got even more overpowered.  Nearly everyone who plays the game ends up using wither Hayate or Hayabusa, and for good reason.  They've been made even faster, their best moves are on the High/Low system and they can literally stun you for an infinite period of time.  Yet Ayane got downgraded, go figure.

Then you have characters like Bayman and Bass.  I understand they're the slow 'tough' characters, but they fricken have moves that can take 3/4 your life with ONE throw or counter.  Basically, a person playing them should just sit there and counter all day, and they'll win in 3 throws/counters.  Kinda pointless if it takes two strings of 18 hit combos with Ayane to beat them, but they can defeat you with 3 hits.

Other characters are just out of luck and stuck in the middle.  Like Hitomi, Helena, Leifang and etc.  They don't excel at speed, yet don't do enough damage to outtake stronger characters.

And worst of all, they added some new mechanic where if you are hit on the ground, your character automatically stands up.  I've been beaten by people who literally knock me on the ground to start a match, then stun me on the floor, throw me AS I'm getting up and repeat the process till I lose.  With no way to counter it.

The point of my long and winded speech?  They have a LOT of things to fix for DOA5.  Hopefully they'll be true to their word when they said the game engine is getting a massive overhaul in DOA5.
