JET applicants, anyone?
PithyGriff:
Hey, it's that time of year again. JET application opens in a week or so. Was just curious if anyone here is applying. Or is anyone a current/former ALT?
Soryon:
What is JET?

I'm not applying, but good look to anyone who is!

It's a program through the Japanese government to teach English in Japanese public schools. If accepted, you assist the current JTE (Japanese Teacher of English) any way they see fit. It's pretty common that you just act as an English talk-box to pronounce words. But the responsibilities can get a lot more involved.
And thanks, kurandoinu =)

I'm not this year, but I'm considering applying once I finish my degree. It looks like a really good opportunity to spend a few years in Japan, with plenty of support, and great pay, but I don't know how well I'd do as a teacher. It also looks like it can be a bit hit and miss - if you get placed in a good school, with friendly + helpful staff and pupils, then it sounds really great. If you end up somewhere with unfriendly staff, or where it's really rough, I hear it can be pretty hellish. No idea how common that is though. So I'm pretty torn on whether to apply or not - though I guess I still have a few years to decide yet :)
Anyway, good luck! I'd be curious to get another opinion on what it's like, so be sure to keep us all posted on how you get on (assuming you're applying, anyway). :)
